Is it safe to ignore SAT on UCs applications?

My daughter took SAT once, we’re waiting for the second result which will come soon. She said it was easier than previous but looking at her practice record, I want to be hopeful but the reality says she’ll be lucky to get 1400. I’m just so confused if we should submit scores or do without. The score before was 1310, 710 Math 600RW. Am I wrong to think this score is not good enough to submit? Appreciate your advice…

UCs don’t look at test scores for admission decisions.

UC eliminated its standardized test requirement in 2020.

UC no longer considers SAT or ACT test scores when making admissions decisions or awarding scholarships. Test scores submitted as part of the application may be used as an alternate method of fulfilling minimum requirements for eligibility or for course placement after matriculation at UC.

Students can self-report ACT and/or SAT scores in the admission application, but they must first submit the application without scores. Once the application has been submitted, the student can log back into the application to report ACT or SAT scores. If a student self-reports a test score, they should provide the official score report when they receive an offer of admission from UC.

Although UC does not use SAT (or ACT) scores for admission, SAT or ACT scores are two of the various ways of fulfilling the Entry Level Writing Requirement without needing to take the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam or taking an English composition course for those who did not already fulfill the requirement on entry.

Would it make sense for OOS applicants to submit high scores for this purpose, to cover all bases/just in case they’re needed for eligibility? Or would that be a super rare scenario and submission would somehow be irritating to the UC AOs?

The UC’s will accept SAT score submissions and as noted the score can be used to fulfill UC eligibility requirements or used for course placement such as the Entry Level writing requirement mentioned by @ucbalumnus.

An applicant will not be disadvantaged by submitting the score since it is not used for admission purposes.

Just coming back to this thread to point out something. It appears that, after logging back into the application to submit scores, only the paper SAT is accepted, not the digital test. To report SAT scores, the app appears to require the subsection scores out of 40 - they have an asterisk. As far as I can see, subsection scores out of 40 are not provided by College Board for the digital SAT - can’t find them anywhere in Score Details - am I missing something?

This is consistent with https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/elwr/:

Please note: The digital SAT Reading and Writing section score has not been approved to meet the ELWR.

I’m curious about whether there is any other type of eligibility that SAT scores might be used for, whether the digital score might satisfy that, and whether an official score report would do, since it seems it can’t be self-reported.

As an aside, the paper SAT was last available an entire year ago now. It’s interesting, albeit perhaps unsurprising, that UC is not exactly in a rush to approve the digital test for the purpose of ELWR and/or accept self-reported digital scores via the application.

This is only a guess, but my guess is that UC will have some equivalency figured out for the digital SAT by the spring when accepted students start submitting their SIR and all of the associated information. Current first-years wouldn’t have taken the digital SAT, so it hasn’t been an issue yet…

(And as far as I know, SAT scores are only used for ELWR.)

I think the majority of students now use AP or IB scores for ELWR qualification.

ELWR qualifying test scores

Score 30 or better on ACT English Language Arts, or 63 or better on ACT English + Reading.

Score 680 or higher on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT. Please note: The digital SAT Reading and Writing section score has not been approved to meet the ELWR.

Score 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English (Language or Literature) or Seminar.

Score of 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement assessment in Research.

Score 5 or higher on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examination in English (Language A only) or 6 or higher on a Standard Level Examination in English (Language A only).

The (paper) SAT was also used for satisfying the English A-G requirement

SAT Writing and Language Test

Score of 31 meets the first three years; score of 36 meets the entire four-year requirement.

I don’t know if there were any other types of eligibility that it was used for.

A-G requirements are important at the time of admission, not afterward, correct?
