Is it stupid to have a double major in two different fields? or should they compliment each other?

So I want to be a Criminal Justice major, and a Health Studies major. I’m a freshman I’m indecisive, but these two fields are my interests, but I have trouble explaining to people that I really want to do both because of interest? Is it stupid to have these two majors? Otherwise I was going to major in one, and then minor in the other, but I already started taking classes for both?

I think it’s less typical to have a double major in two completely different fields, but I don’t think I’d call it stupid. I imagine there’s a way you could make those two beneficial for one another in some capacity.

I’m a physics/math double major, but I’ve often thought about double majoring in physics and anthropology. The two fields aren’t really related in any sense, but I’m equally interested in both fields. It simply isn’t a possible plan for me though, because the course schedules would almost completely overlap.

I think it’s fine if it makes sense to you. (In many cases, two different fields will have more in common than people think. For instance, I’m a math major and I’ve considered double majoring in philosophy. Some people think they’re unrelated because one is a science and one is a humanity, but I can see that they’re connected and I’ve taken classes dealing with both.)

Having two majors that are similar to one another is convenient if there is considerable overlap and multiple classes count for for both majors (I can imagine this being the case for say, International Relations & Political Science, or Anthropology & History, etc) – however, having a double major that are in two separate disciplines altogether isn’t “stupid.” Oftentimes, people will double major in something that piques their interests and something which will provide solid career outcomes. My friend is a Computer Science/Theater double major which I think exemplifies this idea.

Biology/Classics double major here! Ended up being a major topic for my MD/PhD admissions essays.

Strong double majors typically a include a business and/or math degree as part of the pair. For instance, one of the best combos is pairing Finance with a specialized trade degree like Nursing, Building Construction or Hotel Management.

An Earth & Ocean Sciences and Classics double major here. I loved both majors and got a lot out of them, including several great job and grad school offers by graduation.

Why worry about explaining things to other people if you’re studying what you love and have at least some plan for what you’d like to do?
