Is it stupid to pick Yale over Duke if I'm interested in neuroscience/biology/premed?

I’m considering Duke and Brown PLME and Yale right now. I’m starting to really fall in love with Yale from what I hear about the professors who are really engaged and concerned about undergrads, and the amazing residential college system, and the active students overall.

But when I visited Duke, I heard the same exact spiel about involved and easily accessible faculty, active students who did remarkable things in the surrounding Durham area, and all the research opportunities available for undergrads.

Both schools seem very undergrad-focused to me. But does Duke have a better reputation in the sciences? Oh and I’d have a full-ride there too, but I got a ton of aid from Yale so that’s not really an issue if I really want Yale more. I think I could fit in at both, but I haven’t visited Yale yet.

And should I just discard PLME as a choice? I mean guaranteed med school? That’s a little hard to say ‘no’ to…

if I picked Yale, would I be making a mistake??

I’d be going to Brown if I wanted to be a doctor… PLME is a huge opportunity.

Are you serious? Why would you even think to turn PLME down?!

I’d say, yes… you would be making a mistake.

Brown has a great neuroscience department, and if you’ve been admitted to PLME, I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity.

Guaranteed admittance to med school outweighs anything either of the other schools can offer you. It’s something very few people on the planet have the privilege of being awarded… and Brown is no slouch in the sciences.

Something like half of the people who apply to medical school don’t get in the first time. Why risk it?

Open curriculum for undergrad, so you can really explore and grow as a person without having to worry about satisfying both a core curriculum AND pre-med requirements for a given major… I mean, it’s a no brainer.

Even though there’s tons of research opportunities in Raleigh / Durham (it’s called the research triangle around here for a reason), I don’t think it’s worth considering vs your other options.

Yale or PLME imo…

PLME if you want a guaranteed good med school opportunity and really like the Brown culture. Be sure that you can handle being there for a long time, however.

Yale if you really love Yale (it is a truly special place). You will be required to take MCATs, of course, but you WILL get into med schools if you go to Yale so don’t worry too much about turning a med school opportunity down for Yale.

Sorry, I don’t understand why you are considering Duke unless you got a full ride. You don’t have the guaranteed med school opportunity of Brown; the sciences are no better than Yale; it doesn’t have the same resources/intellectual culture as Yale; etc.

I agree with the above poster…

Definitely go for Brown or Yale. If you are confident in your ability to perform well in college, I would go to Yale. There are plenty of great medical schools other than Brown and, who knows, you might not want to spend 8 years there. If you can do well at Yale (and you probably will given you got into PLME), then you will definitely get into a medical school comparable or substantially better than Brown.

If, on the other hand, you don’t want to deal with having to worry about your GPA or getting a great MCAT score… then go with PLME.

If you really love Yale, then I’d say take the risk and pick Yale! You only get this experience once!

If it was up to me, I would go to Brown! I agree with everybody else, it gives you the least-stressful environment. I know two guys in this program, and they love it! However, the full ride to Duke may best for you and your family (considering the FA you’d receive at Yale), I don’t know your financial situation.

Yale is also a magnificent place that you most likely won’t regret going there. You’re in a tough bind, but a ton of people would want to be in your shoes !!! :)

I vote PLME. While I love Yale, Brown is also an amazing school, and automatic admittance to a great med school as well will reduce so much undergrad stress imo. So I’d say while Yale is amazing, PLME is too much of a huge opportunity to pass up.

Turning down a full ride at Duke is madness. It’s not even the money component as much as the special perks like top-notch advising, research opportunities, personalized opportunities, etc.

Getting a Duke full ride is quite possibly the best academic achievement one can dream about. Getting into med school from Duke is basically a guarantee since it has a near 90% acceptance rate.

Duke full ride>HYPSM, Northwestern HPME and Brown PLME

Brown has more similarities to Yale than differences. PLME all the way.

Could not disagree more… many qualified applicants get rejected from medical school when applying… and the vast majority of those who are accepted do NOT go to ivy league medical schools.

While acceptance to PLME and Yale is an indicator of future success, it by no means guarantees acceptance to medical school. The well known grade deflation at Duke, for example, could hinder your ability to get into a top 10 medical school easily…

The freedom you will have to really explore academically as an undergrad at Brown with its open curriculum, design your own major, all the while not having to stress about beating the C/B- curve in your pre-med classes (like in MANY at Duke) in addition to guaranteed acceptance to medical school far, far outweighs the free ride at Duke.

While you will incur some debt (all medical students do), and Brown may not give you a full ride… lets remember you will be a physician, and your salary will mean you wont have any problem paying it back.

Yale is by far the strongest in the sciences, out of the three. Yale students also have the highest admit rate into the nation’s top med schools, even higher than PLME students.

^^^That doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t PLME mean guaranteed acceptance…?

I think it should come down to fit though. Think about it, if you can get into PLME, then continuing to work hard should land you into a good med school if you choose not to take up the offer. I think you should go where you can better see yourself for 4 years. Both are excellent schools and Yale’s acceptance rate to med is extremely high.

Haha posterX know what you’re talking about before you post. PLME is a GUARANTEED program into Brown med so obviously they have the highest rate lol.

For normal students, Yale has by far the highest placement into med schools and it prob also has the strongest sciences by a bit. The question is whether it is worth giving up a guarantee into med school.

^PLME students can apply to other med schools. Maybe they are in-state somewhere with a good med school, or just want to leave.

Why go for a guaranteed program into Brown med when you could shoot for Harvard, Yale, UCSF or Hopkins?

id def go brown or yale… yale would be great because i love yale and because it would give you superb chances at all med. schools… + you wouldnt need to spend 8 years at one place. brown on the other hand is a guarantee, but that doesnt mean you wont get into another good one… you could apply to all med schools and if u dont get into the top few, u have brown as a backup… that is a pretty sweet deal imo…

I just picked Yale!! I loved it when I visited, everyone was so nice and helpful, the professors were totally accessible, and the residential colleges are AMAZING!!

And Yale has a 94% med school placement rate=) I hated Providence when I visited…the people were really snobby and a few even seemed kinda racist. As a Chinese girl from Portland where we have a bunch of other East Asians, that was a little upsetting for me. I’d hate to live there for 8 years.

I’m so happy with my decision. Thanks for all your input, everyone! I really appreciate it=)

Congratulations and best of luck at Yale!!! :)

I also just committed to Yale! I was actually very impressed with what Yale has to offer budding scientists; it has made a huge financial investment in terms of hiring new faculty and building state-of-the-art facilities. Its commitment to undergraduate education is unmatched anywhere!
