Is it the same thing?

I just have a quick question…i’m enrolled for the chemistry fundamentals I class (CHM 2045). I have two classes for chemistry - the lecture and discussion. I was wondering if the discussion class is the laboratory class because it didn’t say laboratory under the class schedule. it just said discussion so is it the same thing?

Thanks!

Yes, you are correct. You will get a grade in the discussion section and one in the lab but there is one grade (worth 4 credits) for the class. Your discussion section grade is usually 25% of your CHM 2045C grade. If you are taking CHM 2046L this spring, that class is done as separate class grade (worth 3 credits) and lab grade (worth one credit).

so… Chemistry I doesn’t have a lab component? and Chemistry II does?

sorry i’m just kind of confused. if Chemistry I doesn’t have a lab component what is the discussion class for?

The discussion section for chem 1 (2045C) IS the lab. The grade that you receive in it is part of your overall, 4 credit, Chem 1 grade. So for Chem 2045C you get ONE GRADE for both the lecture and the discussion/lab together. In Chem 2 (2046L) you get two grades and must sign up separately for the Chem 2 lecture and Chem 2 lab. You get two separate grades for this class. Hopefully you understand this now (if not, I am very concerned that you will not do well in any of the chemistry classes).

Make sure that you attend the SARC and SI sections for this course as it is very difficult. My daughter, who had straight A’s in high school chemistry, had a really tough time in CHM 2045C.

Thanks for clearing that up, seiclan, I had the same question. :)

okay thank you! i understand now. it was just before when you said discussion counted towards the CHM 2045 grade I didn’t get that you meant the discussion is the lab. sorry about that but thank you for clearing things up for me!

Just to clarify a little more, it is just a discussion, not a lab, you don’t do any experiments or anything, you just review what was done during class and get more one on one teaching. Its up to the teachers how they want there discussion sections to go… some use them to give quizzes/tests, others use them to just review what happened during the week and there is absolutely no graded component of the discussion section (thats how my teacher used it)

My teacher was excellent and also very easy to get an A in as long as you understand all the material (not just memorizing it)… look for Andres Campiglia
