Is it too early to interview?

We’re visiting WashU this summer and my D will be a junior in August. Do you think it is too early to interview? Should she wait and have an alumni interview later?

I don’t think you can interview until March or so of junior year. Even that is a bit early. You want to make your best impression, when you can talk clearly and convincingly about why Wash U is a good match for
you–what you can offer and what it provides that you are interested in.

Besides, strategically, you want to have your early interviews at schools that are not at the top of your list.

The on-campus interview may not be that important–a lot of them are conducted by undergrads. What’s much more important is showing interest: make sure the admissions office knows you’re there. They will arrange for you to meet with faculty in your area of interest if you let them know ahead of time. Find out who the admissions rep for your area is and keep in e-mail contact with them.

D just finished her freshman yr at Wash U and absolutely loves it!

Thanks for the reply.
