Is it unethical to EA at the UofC while EDing someplace else?

I was thinking of applying ED to Wharton/Duke. Is it frowned upon to apply EA to Chicago simultaneously?

No, not in your unique case. I sincerely hope you get into your ED school. Maybe you should consider Cornell as well.

UChicago says that it’s fine. It’s not against any rules unless the ED school says you can only apply there.

What matters is that you immediately withdraw your application to Chicago if accepted to one of the ED programs.

It’s not unethical at all. In fact, it’s commonly done.

Yes, be sure to withdraw immediately if you are indeed accepted ED. I took the same route of applying ED (to Wharton) and EA to Chicago. It worked out for the best :)

There’s no rule against it. And there’s a reason why there’s no rule against it: because people applying ED to another university usually consider themselves to not be good enough to get into HYPSM, and therefore, unlikely to be accepted simultaneously to both Chicago and their ED school. Just being real.

However, as parchment.com indicates, Chicago loses an extra 10-20% of cross-admits with the top ED schools (from where it should be considering Chicago’s cross-admit performance with HYPSM), indicating that there are indeed more than a few cross-admits with ED schools.

Feel free to do so. It’s completely ethical.

einstein, you are welcome to apply ED to another school and also apply EA to UChicago. We request that students who are accepted ED promptly contact us to withdraw their application from consideration, even if you have not heard a final admissions decision from our office.
