I am in the process of making student business cards in order to market myself to potential employers at career fairs, etc, and there’s one design on Moo.com that I am particularly fond of.
But the problem is, I’m not sure if it just seems desperate or tacky to have the words “hire me” on there even though its purpose is so I can land an internship in the entertainment field. I really like the way it looks design wise but I don’t know if it’s too much.
Your resume is what says “hire me” (not literally).
It is more important to go through the normal career fair/interview flow than it is to make business cards which will be lost.
An alternative reason is that a lot of times you actually give business cards to people for networking and not because they have an open-position. I have given my card to people who are seeking a job with my company, or who want to chat with me about some experience I’ve had, or just who seem like they would be a cool person to know. You will do the same, even as a student.
Unless you are an artist or a designer or something, your business card doesn’t have to “stand out.” It needs to have the appropriate information so I can reach you if I want to contact you. That doesn’t mean you can’t have one with a stylish (if professional) design, but focus on being conservative and professional. You never know who you’re going to give the card to, so err on the side of conservative!
(I played around with the design, and you can delete those lines altogether or you can replace them with other text. So if you still really like the design, you can always put something else there or delete them entirely.)
