Well, I haven’t taken the MCAT (in april I will) but my GPA is about a 3.5/3.6 and my MCAT score is looking around a 30. Should I waste my time applying to good schools? I wasn’t thinking Ivy League, but maybe like UCLA or Mt. Sinai or Michigan, etc. Thanks.

Generally I advise not applying to schools if your statistics are more than a little below their averages.

Take your GPA*10 and add your MCAT score. That gives you what I refer to – this is purely my nomenclature – as your “index”. Yours will be around a 65 or so. Find schools that are below a 68 or so and generally I advise kids to stick to those. USC, Tufts, UC Irvine, for example, are all around there.

Make sure you manage the process well and apply early.

And http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=213924

Also my suspicion is that you’re in Kansas, which makes you out of state for Michigan and UCLA. Michigan OOS is quite reasonable if you’ve got the numbers, but is otherwise killer. UCLA is brutal regardless of state status.

I should add that the relevant number is BCPM GPA.

kush, as a fellow Kansan, feel free to PM me about specific midwest schools…
