Is it worth it for an untraditional college student to study Computer Science?

I’m a 24 year old who is considering the University of Utah’s Computer Science Entertainment Arts and Engineering degree. I have experience working in the entertainment industry in the film production end, and am interested in expanding my skills. However, because of my current mathematics level, it would take me until Summer 2017 - taking an average of 17-18 credit hours per semester - to graduate. This news is a little disheartening for me.

I know that the future of entertainment is with video games, and I want to be apart of that community when I enter into the work force. And despite being in remedial math at the moment, I actually perform well in my classes now that I’m mature enough to understand how to pace myself academically. But I’m a little discouraged because of my age entering academia.

Should I still look into this degree? When should a student reconsider studying for the STEM fields?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

27 is not that old! If you really want to develop these skills and have the credential to be part of that industry, you should go for it. Yes, you will be a bit older than the other students but you most likely won’t be alone. College is not always the best thing for an 18 year old to do, the extra maturity you have from being in the working world will likely make you a better student.
