Crippling is the right word when describing this level of debt with a likely low to average paying job/career. $150K debt will impact one’s credit rating, their borrowing ability for a car loan or mortgage, even the type of job one can take. For example, some law enforcement and some law/legal adjacent/courthouse jobs, (which may include communication type jobs) won’t hire people with large debt because they are relatively more at risk for being blackmail/bribery targets. And not to pile on, but having large amounts of debt may limit who will even date/consider marrying the debt holder. My kids in their early twenties and their friends talk about this.
