Is it worth it to go to a reputable college if....

you feel unsure if you can handle the classes? I’ve wanted to go to UCSD for a while (I think mainly for its rank and good atmosphere), but now I’m not so sure. I have a 3.83 GPA and 1790 SAT (taking it again though) and I know my chances aren’t great, but assuming that I do get in, I’ll be below average compared to other students. Hell, I’m having trouble in regular calculus and I’m trying my best.

Anyway, if, by some stroke of luck, you get into a very prestigious school and you’re below average and whatnot, would you still go? Even if you’re trying your hardest right now?

To put things in prospective, half of the students are below average.

See, I am not good in math. It’s the median, not the average.

I got into UCSD with a 3.3 weighted GPA and excelled while I was here.

Grow some confidence.

yeah, one of the things i had trouble adjusting to here was that not everyone is smart. idk why, but i really had that problem (am i an elitist? ha). sure, getting in does require some skills, but just because you got in doesnt mean youre smart.
im terrible at math too.
retaking the second course in the series as well. ): although i do feel a little ashamed…

dont take this the wrong way, but by saying you are trying your best shows that you aren’t trying your best.
yeah i phrased that horribly [damn Psychology]… but what im saying is that you yourself have set this mental level that you are trying your hardest, thus even if you want to go beyond that, you mentally and probably, physically cannot. [see this is what psychology does to you, you start to understand thing, and no im not a psych major, i took it in HS and loved it but I <3 Pharmacy more!]

does that make sense [i think im confused :P]?

also, rule no. 2
just because you “aren’t amazingly awesome” at math doesn’t mean UCSD isn’t the school. You will have to make an effort, and by that i mean talk to the professor, meet during office hours, talk to friends, ask TA’s, get some tutoring. UCSD is a great campus and if you get in that’s awesome, but be prepared to make an effort [and im saying this after 2 days of classes in week 0!!! FRESHMAN YEAR!!]

rule no. 3:
you make up for what you lack in. I lack history. I mean i understand it nad all and I used to get A’s in my AP history courses in HS, but if you ask me something right now, all i could tell you is stuff i know from india and the little tidbits that i found interesting. I would also tell you that i hate history and for some unknown reason i was put into ERC where i have to go through 5 quarters of MMW and 3 [i think] quarters of Regional Specialization, but i think i should pass [if i make the effort and sadly senior year in HS has make me lazy and a procrastinator :P]

so seriously hope you get in, and don’t think of yourself as “below average” that’s just a term coined by some mean person to separate society. Everyone is literally the same, like i said, you make up for what you lack. I make up for math and science from what i lack in history and sports.
best of luck though
if you have any questions feel free to PM me, and if you get to UCSD next year, I’ll see ya around :)

@ ucsdlee aren’t you asian :stuck_out_tongue: ha love that stereotype “you’re asian, you have to be smart and an elitest who doesn’t do anything but study all day long. wait what? you suck at something! Ahh you’re not an asian!! ahhh!”
lol funny people :P

Thank you guys.

It’s really hard to be confident when everyone I know who got in has like 4.0+ GPA’s, 2000+ SAT scores, tons of AP’s, etc. One guy on Yahoo Answers even told me to aim lower! Anyway, enough about them. Thank you everyone for restoring my hope. I really appreciate your answers. :)

My stats weren’t great and I wasn’t a calculus god and I’m doing fine here. If you really want to go here you should DEFINITELY apply. I think if you really utilize your resources here you can get a lot of help with your classes if you need it. Things like office hours and tutoring sessions. There are definitely more options than in high school but you have to actively seek them out because there are a lot more students here and they can’t ask every student how they’re doing. If you’re a motivated person I think you’ll do just fine. :)

Also, never use Yahoo answers ever again. Everything on there is a lie. Ha ha.

Not everything:

Sometimes it’s a clever ■■■■■.

I agree-- go for it–you won’t struggle with everything. You should repeat first level Calc in College, though, to be sure you got a really good grasp before going on. I wish my daughter had done that, would have saved some grief.

If you get into UCSD it means that you have demonstrated to the admissions office that you are capable of succeeding here. I and many others got into UCSD with out ever taking calc. That’s why there is a pre-calc course. There is tutoring, OASIS, seminars on success, and basic intro courses to help you.
You don’t want to have a negative attitude before even getting excepted. I know that choosing colleges is a very difficult and stressful time but you don’t have to be worried about doing poorly before you are even enrolled.
I would say just apply. I’m sure you are planning on apply to more than one UC school. The great thing about applying to the UC’s is that it’s just one app. Apply to UCSD!

@Oyama

Ha ha. Fine you got me. There was a group of people on another forum I post on who would try to make the funniest yet somewhat believable questions on Yahoo answers and see how many serious answers they could get. Needless to say, every other answer is a lie. :P
