I just had my first essay in my one English class. The professor said that usually the first essay is everyone’s lowest score. Each of the essays we write for this semester can be rewritten for a higher score. Is it worth rewriting a B- paper? I just don’t want to seem like a grade-grubber if I choose to do it.
I dont see why you wouldn’t redo it if she is offering the chance to redo it
I’d certainly do it. It isn’t grade grubbing if they offer the opportunity.
I suggest doing it. And doing it soon before the class gets harder and you realize you don’t have time to re-do it!
Don’t do it because of the grade. Do it to make sure you understood the corrections. You’re there to learn, and this is a great opportunity. And you can improve your grade as an added benefit!
The benefit of rewriting the b- paper is that you will improve your writing skills. That will help you throughout your life. Writing can help you bend hearts and minds.
Redoing something isn’t “grade grubbing” . It’s skill improvement.
That being said, by the way I’d grub for those grades. I’m assuming that you intend to go on to a good job and/or grad school. Grades do count. If you mess up, be kind to yourself, but do try to go after every extra point that you can. You won’t regret it.
I’m saying this as a person who is ambivalent about grades. They can be a marker of doing good work, but also just going for grades can suck out some of the soul from your work. You can stop learning for the sake of learning and just go for grades mechanically.
See if you can find a happy medium and use the grade as a metric of improved skills. Take your paper to the writing center at your college and ask them for ways to improve.
@Dustyfeathers definitely hits the nail on the head right there. Writing is like communication, everybody needs to be good at it to some extent for their work.
I agree, re-write the paper. The higher grade you will likely get is a bonus. The important and lasting benefit will be learning from the comments you received and improving your writing skills.
Yes, rewrite the paper. First: You have done much of the work already, and any areas needing improvement are already known to you. Second: It improves your grade. Third: Learning is about discovering where you went wrong so you can improve on it next time. Fourth: Your instructor will see that you ARE one of those students interested in learning and listening to what he/she has to say. Fifth: Sometimes life doesn’t give you second chances – so grab this opportunity.
