Hi. Is it worth taking honors version classes? Essentially, I was told the class size would be smaller and everyone in the class would be in the honors program, but you’d be learning the same material. In that case, then wouldnt the curve be better in a regular class? So, it taking Hversion classes worth getting a possibly lower grade. Im planning on going to med school, and I want to know if the they care if its Hversion or if theyd just rather see a better grade in a regular class.

Thank you for your input!

As a current pre-med, it really depends on the class. what specific class are u referring to? If u are interested in going to medical school, then I would STRONGLY reccomend taking H version Biology and Chemistry classes. These classes will not only help u stand out from a normal applicant, but it will also prepare u for the MCAT. Other than Bio and Chem, I wouldn’t necessarily say it would be worth it because the material is basically the same and in some cases H version classes are harder.

Med schools care about gpa first and foremost. That said, all things being equal, if you think you can get an A in an honors ochem class go for it. I talked with my ochem I prof about the differences (I got an A+ in the regular variant), and it amounted to covering some of the otherwise optional material because the pacing allowed for it (still only talking like 1 extra test question per exam here) and doing research projects (i.e. presenting on the polymerization of epoxides). I’m not as familiar with the humanities classes, but I have a friend in the honors program I could ask if you want to pm me any questions.

I wouldn’t take an honors class because it is more “impressive” than the regular version because frankly, it’s not. In some cases, it is easier than the regular version of the class. I would take it if you need it as a requirement for an honors program, or if it’s a better fit in your schedule. I am almost positive that med schools won’t care at all whether your course has an “H” in its name or not.

what OMGItsJustin said, i doubt that anyone will care, it will just mean more busy work for you. it does help to take H versions to meet the honors citation but i wouldn’t take them if they weren’t going to be easy/enjoyable

I took an H version bio my freshman year (BSCI106), and it just made things harder for me since I had to write a couple of formal lab reports that were graded very harshly and attend a few inane book discussions at night that other students didn’t have to do. But I also took an H version music class that I really enjoyed

I’m taking H-version English 101 because of the smaller class size. It may be harder, but I have a friend that took a Scholars ENGL101 and got like a 97%, so it may not be that bad.

Thank you all for the responses. I think I will keep Engl101H since it’s just writing essays, but Im still uncertain about the BSCI106H. Ohimtired–Do you think that it would have been easier to get a higher grade in Bio had it not been an honors course then?

It definitely depends on the class, and it might not be worth it for you if you don’t want to take on extra work. But for me the main advantage of h-level classes has been the small class size. In my opinion it just makes for an overall better experience - you can get to know the students in your class more easily and make more connections with professors (which can be helpful later down the line for recommendations, networking, etc).

kpop, i do think it would have been easier for me to get a higher grade in the regular version. i’m just looking at the schedule though and i see that dr.shofner is teaching the regular version, if any sections of hers opens up, i would take her, she is very sweet
