Is knowing dynamics essential for structural/geotechnical engineers?

My school requires that you take dynamics to be a structural/geotechnical engineer. But the class is not a prerequisite for any upper-level structural/geotechnical class. The only require you take statics and mechanics. I also thought dynamics was more for the mechanical and aerospace engineers. So is dynamics really all that needed in structural/geotechnical engineering? And if so, how much?

For anything involving movement, like structural dynamics or earthquake engineering, yes, dynamics would be the first course of many you will have to take to get into those fields. Further, I would consider basic dynamics to be a requirement for most engineering degrees (except for electrical/computer or biomed).

I agree with rogracer (I’m a structural engineer).
