I didn’t see Love Story or Titanic. I’m not planning too.

“Here’s a trivia question for you – how many under-30 women have won Best Actress for roles where they were NOT playing prostitutes? I don’t know the answer, by the way, but I’d bet that a good 50% were hooking.”

LOL

“I don’t get the thing of imitation in biopics as deserving of Oscars: Reese Witherspoon, Jamie Fox, Cate Blanchett, Phillip Seymour Hoffman”

I thought Jamie Foxx and Cate Blanchett were terrific. I understand having a problem with “the thing of imitation”… but I thought they did great jobs.

Cate Blanchett was better than the 5 male Bob Dylans in that movie.

Leonardo was great in the Departed. I was worried for his welfare. I think he is a fantastic actor.

I like Matt Damon too. There is a resemblance between the two.

Sort of off topic and may have been mentioned in some other thread, but I think the Slate splice job of Election/Hillary is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. (I didn’t even realize that my feeling that Hillary comes across as an older version of Tracy Flick was a common observation.) Put “Tracy Flick” into the search engine at [YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.](http://www.youtube.com). and you’ll find it.

PS. I don’t believe this! It seems to have been deleted since last night!

I’d never seen “Love Story” before last night and I’m with the people who were glad to see Jenny go. I think she probably had leukemia since they said she needed to see a hemotologist but except for an IV nobody seemed too interested in saving her. I also thought the whole ‘she’s dying’ thing kinda came out of left field – not even a Carol Burnett ‘ahem’ cough first? I feel cheated…do you suppose they didn’t feel they needed to telegraph it because everybody had read the book and knew she was going to die?

The TCM host said that Segal had written and sold the screenplay first and then wrote the book on the producer’s suggestion which is why it’s so short.

My vote for most overrated Oscar movie is, hands down, Dances with Wolves…you can call me Walks Out of Movie

One of the best movies Leonardo DiCaprio was ever in was This Boy’s Life, from the early 90’s (from a book by Tobias Wolfe). DiCraprio seemed so young at the time, and he was so amazing in that part. Also starred Robert DeNiro. I don’t know if he won any awards for that or not, but he should have.

I agree about Debra Winger looking bad when dying in Terms of Endearment. That was closer to being believable than Jenny’s death-- for sure.

My mother called “Dances with Wolves”, “Dances with feathers in his Hair”. She gave it such a pan, I didn’t ever see it. I liked “Pulp Fiction” a lot which I saw on DVD without my dh who thought it sounded too bloody for squeamish him. The movies I really wanted to walk out of (but unfortunately date didn’t) were Walkabout (boring!) and Death in Venice (even more boring!)

I wouldnt make such a blanket statement. Ali MacGraw was an excellent actress. O’Neil was kind of wooden but has enough preppie look to make it convincing. By the way I think Harvard in those days, sons and daughters of the aristocratic class stood better chance of getting in.

Re post #48 - I think that calling Ali MacGraw an excellent actress is stretching it somewhat, but she gave a good performance in “The Getaway,” and was just right in “Goodbye, Columbus.” If you want to feel old - she’ll be turning 70 in April, according to IMDB.

If people can sit through “Love Story,” they’re made of sterner stuff than I am.

But Kate Winslet is an outstanding actress, certainly one of the best of her generation. She’s shown exceptional range, and I think has something like 5 Oscar nominations to her name already. Leading me to wonder, what’s it gonna take for her to be awarded one?

Oh, I love Dances With Wolves. Has a soft spot with me as it was on in the hospital while I was in labor.

And LOVE Pulp Fiction.

I’ve only walked out of two movies: The Deer Hunter (too intense for this daughter of a career military man) and History of the World, Part II (just too stupid).

I guess I should have added one more word to that sentence of mine you quoted, and that would be “convincingly”. I don’t think that many would refer to Ali as an excellent actress. She was good in a couple of her films. Ryan was also good, not great. His daughter is a much more talented actor, even as an adult. Neither he nor Ali had film careers that could come close to comparing with what Leonardo and Kate have had already, nor the critical acclaim, awards, or box office numbers.

I’m with you, dstark. I grew up seeing (both at the movies and on stage) lots of Bob Fosse musicals, and I thought it was a fascinating look at his life.

I adored Love Story when it first came out (I was 13 and impressionable), but it definitely hasn’t aged well.

“All That Jazz” didn’t win the best picture Oscar - it was nominated with Breaking Away, Apocalypse Now, Norma Rae, and Kramer vs. Kramer, which won. They’re all good films, but I’d rank Kramer last in that particular bunch. Breaking Away is my favorite of the five - maybe the best sports film ever made?

Article in the Washington Post today about the truly depressing crop of movies up for Oscars this year…doom, gloom and death everywhere you look. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood…etc, etc., just the names make you feel all warm and fuzzy…ha.

Am I stupid? Neither DH or I “got” American Beauty. We got that it was uber-creepy how Kevin Spacey was obsessed with his teenage daughter’s cheerleader friend. But what was with the rose petals everywhere? And the plastic garbage bag floating in the wind? I’m just confused…
