Is LSU worth $120,000?

I live in Florida and want to go to LSU but the school did not offer my parents any financial aid. The cost will be $30,000 a year to go there. My dad is not willing to pay that much and wants me to stay in Florida. What do you think? Am I being out of line by still wanting to go there?

You can want, but if your parents don’t think it’s worth an extra $120K then either you don’t go or you do it yourself. And I don’t think if would be worth taking on that kind of debt for. I don’t know your parent’s situation, but I don’t think it’s worth an extra $30K per year - I don’t know the school. Why don’t you make a pros-and-cons list of what LSU has that is so much better than the equivalent for whatever Florida schools you got in to? Then you and your parents can discuss it objectively.

…Florida…LSU
Cost… x … x + $30K
Size … ? … ?
Strength in Major …? … ?
Dorm support … ? … ?
whatever else is important to you
Drinking culture ? … ?

It’s hard for me to believe that LSU is worth that extra money when there are plenty of equivalently ranked colleges in Florida that you could attend more cheaply.

I don’t think any undergrad school is worth going into that much debt for, especially when you have excellent lower-priced alternatives.

While LSU is a decent school, it’s not worth that much money if you have cheaper alternatives.

What do you like about LSU that you can’t get at a Florida school?

Which Florida schools did you get accepted to?

I know that LSU isn’t $30k more than a Florida school; it’s probably about $15k more. However, it’s probably not worth that much.

simply put, NO!

60k over four years: LSU COULD be worth it, depending on what your other options are, and why you’d enjoy LSU more. Personally, I don’t see much difference between state schools: to me, Berkeley isn’t worth 60k more than Arizona State, because at their heart they have the same academic philosophy: to train people to do well in their state. I suspect there’s even less of a difference between LSU and the Florida school you’re considering.

whoa. i definitely would NOT pay that much money just to go to an OOS public. if we were talking ivy league or something, maybe, but definitely not for a random public school. you didn’t get any money for being OOS? the reason i clicked this thread is because i’m having my brother apply and they have some nice scholarships for OOS kids who meet requirements.

Where are you getting the 30k number from? OOS tuition, according to LSU’s website is about 14k a year and R&B looks to to be around $7-8k a year. This means you may be able to to swing going to LSU for about $23-24k.

$6,000 less may not seem like that much, but that is $24,000 over 4 years, and might sway your parents a little.

Good luck

Admittedly, if LSU is a perfect fit, if you’ll perform way better there, then that’s likely worth the money. If not though, then I don’t see it.

LSU is not a particularly distinguished or distinctive university. I’m not saying that to bash it, just to suggest that there’s no apparent reason to spend that much money for a rather average state U. I don’t know what about it would fit you any better than your in-state options.

Excellent ■■■■■

No. It makes no sense at all. What is your motivation? To get out of state? To pay up for that? Think again. No college is worth that price, if you have alternatives.

What other options are there? UF is significantly better than LSU and FSU is certainly no worse. There are enough similarities that I can’t imagine the difference being crushing.
