parents did not go to college (mom dropped out of high school), low income family, troublesome teenage life. Does it help to write about unfortunate circumstances in my essay?

If neither of your parents went to college, you would stand an excellent chance of being admitted as a first-generation applicant, not only to Michigan, but to plenty of top schools. Do you have any leadership positions in any of your EC’s?

not to much. I led one of the classes which the whole school participates once a month for the whole year. Other than that, not to much. Oh, I am a member of the teen board at the hospital I volunteer at.

Well, for your Senior year, you should try and be more than a member of Amnesty or Math Team.

thanks, u are very helpful. just one more question. how much harder is it for an out of stater to get than it is for an instater? does it help to come from minnesota (is minnesota represented well?)

Obviously, all state schools have a required % of in-state students it has to accept. For Michigan, I believe the % is not too bad…(in the 30s % ??)
Anyhow, Michigan has Rolling Admissions, so send in your application as early as you can, like September/October, that definitely increases your chances. Waiting until December is a mistake.

And no, coming from Minnesota is no different than coming from Alabama.

haha i sent my app in in february
