Is MIT a good reach for me?

Hey! I want to go into aerospace engineering, and MIT is the best. Chances?
GPA: 4.2 W, 3.95 UW
SAT: 1390/2030 (730 CR, 660 M, 640 W) not my best work…
ACT: havent gotten it back yet, but i think in the 30s
Classes: 6 APs (5 on US Gov, the rest next year), all honors and accelerateds where available

ECs:12 Editor in Chief of school paper, 10-11 Sports Editor, 9 Reporter
11-12 NHS
9-12 Key Club
11-12 Engineering Club
12 President of Political Awareness Club, 11 member
youth member of an important church board
member of a community youth advisory board
major role in 2 school levy campaigns

Summer Programs:Presidential Classroom-Science, Technology & Public Policy (a week in D.C., meeting congressmen and agency officials and having discussions)
Purdue’s Seminar of Top Engineering Prospects

Honors+Awards: Scholarship to Presidential Classroom (summer program)
Williams College Book Award (given to 1 junior in top 5% who has demonstrated intellectual leadership and has made a significant contribution to the extracurricular life of the school)

bump please

They’ll tell you that your SAT is too weak for MIT, especially the 660 in math. Have you taken any SAT IIs?

Yeah the SAT is way too weak…probably another 170 points will be needed, especially in math.

if i get a 33-34 on the act, would i have better chances?
i dont want to pay and study for sat iis if the only school i need them for is completely out of my reach.

You might be better with a 34…but even then I dont know. It really depends on what you want to do.

CalTech, Rice, Purdue, and Maryland at College park also have great aerospace programs.

You seem involved in a lot (yay! - locked up in a room is bad!), though your SATs are a little low. I would do a retake. Also, how does a 4.2 compare to the rest of your class?

My understanding is that you have to take SATII’s even if you submit the ACT in place of the SATI.

o, i forgot, 20/439 but upwardly mobile for next year. one of the best high schools in ohio. it won the siemen’s award this year.

You have an interesting mix of ECs and awards. Good job!

As for the SATs that everyone’s talking about, are you re-taking? You’ll probably be fine if you do. I’m attending MIT in the fall, and I scored a lot worse than 2030 the first time I time I took it, but I managed to improve some 200+ points the second time.

i’m just dropping the sat. the act is my test. if that one is not so good, i’ll retake it.
for MIT, you only have to take the writing once right?

UPDATE: 34 ON ACT! 34E, 34M, 34R, 35S!

any new thoughts? should i shoot for it now?

go for it! You’ve got a solid record. None of your EC’s are spectacular, but you definitely could be admitted.

You do know you have to take two of the SATII subject tests, right?

One of them probably should be the Math IIC. The science ones might be a little bit tough if you won’t have taken an entire science AP yet. It probably would be good if you could ace one of them, though, considering it doesn’t look like you have many substantive science EC’s.

Just a note. Aerospace Engineering at MIT is much much harder than a lot of peer schools with the exception of maybe Caltech. Try to have extremely high standards for your AP Calc BC and AP physics classes next year. Like even if you have the highest grade, push yourself for the 100% (unless you can’t maintain A’s in your other classes, too.) There are a lot of hard parts of Aero E that are hard to prepare for beforehand (the design element and writing software for engineering, etc.), so its best if you have a good foundation in some of the theory.

Agreed with collegalum on all counts…especially the difficulty of MIT’s Aerospace program. Have you done anything in high school that shows your passion for Aero E (the summer seminar seems close)? Talking about that on your application might be helpful; on last year’s application, at least one question was designed just so you could talk about your interest in your prospective major.

Also, you still need to take the SAT IIs: one of the maths (level 1 or level 2), and one of the “sciences” (physics, chem, or biology).
