I was thinking about joining model united nations and was wondering how good it looks on applications.

It probably does look good. But I would encourage you to do it regardless; Model UN is one of the most interesting and enjoyable things I’ve done in high school.

An attitude of looking good will not get you far. It is fabulous but are you interested? Will you have enthusiasm?

Model UN is a common EC that most international students like me do for college application. But I think the most important thing is, you have to love it to get devoted to it. Or that activity is solely for the sake of activity.

I’m interested regardless, it looks awesome. I was just wondering what schools think of it.

Schools look at your EC’s to see if you DO SOMETHING other than just sit in class. They are not as obsessed as you may think about ranking EC’s as being better or more important. They want to know if you are an interesting person who participates in your school community hoping that you might do the same in their community.
Aside from that they do like to see if you do pursue your interests by having at least one activity that you pursue over a longer period of time. And more competitive schools like to see that you have some leadership potential…
Model UN is a great activity to join if you are interested. Do what you like/love :-)

As long as your EC’s can relate to your passion / interest and then you can relate that passion / interest to college, then it will look good. It’s not good if you simply have some random EC’s that don’t relate to your interests, you know. But I think as long as you like it, do it!

The schools you have listed all stick mostly to “formula admissions” based on your academic numbers (GPA, test scores, etc.). They are unlikely to care whether or not you are involved in anything outside of getting good grades.

Do the activity if you would enjoy it, but keep your grades and test scores up!

What do you have to do to participate in Model UN (honestly, I don’t know).

If it’s ‘sign up’ then go away for a week – then I don’t see it as helping much.

If it’s something you had to work for, do projects, possibly competitive, and if these projects then carried forward into the Model UN, then it’s significantly better – though this is because of the work it took to get there.

Yes I think it has something to do with my intended majors. Thanks guys!!!

If you enjoy it, do it. If you don’t, don’t.

What will ultimately lead to the best-looking ECs is not choosing ECs based on how you think they will look, but based on what you like, both because colleges can tell when you’re just making a laundry list of things you were marginally involved in to try to look good and because you’ll end up accomplishing more in activities you like, which is far more important than simply being a member.
