Is my 29 too low?

Looking on CC frankly makes me feel like crap about my ACT!!

So tell me, is my 29 too low for schools like UChicago, Tufts, Brown or Marquette?

I’m considering retaking, but am cautious about wasted money, effort, time if I don’t improve.

I have certain hooks, though, that balance it out: I’m black, extremely involved in athletics, leadership positions, etc. and I’m an IB Diploma candidate.

Thanks for your excellent advice!!!

29 is fine for Marquette, a little too low for Tufts, definitely too low for Brown and Chicago.

Even if the middle 50% for brown and UChicago is 29-33 ?

If the middle 50% for UChicago is 29-33, then that means you are fairly close to the bottom 25% with your 29. While the fact that your score is in in the middle 50% puts you in a better situation than if it lower than the middle 50%, you will probably need to have some pretty good EC’s and a really good GPA to compensate for the fact that you are in the lowest portion of the middle 50. If you are truly interested in UChicago, Tufts, and Brown, I highly suggest trying to improve your score to improve you chances.

Edit: Just read your hooks, they will certainly help you out, but I’m not sure if they will be enough to compensate.

Middle 50% for Chicago is not 29-33. It’s 30-34.

https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/classprofile.shtml

Those admitted in the lowest 25% (i.e., 30 and under) are usually athletes or minorities.

What kind of weight do test scores carry anyway? And I do happen to be a minority and recruit for UChicago, so lucky me lol.

Oh sorry, I didn’t read that in your original post.

Well, in that case, a 29 is a pretty decent score to have. It still won’t give you a great shot at admission (probably something like 30% of URMs with that score are admitted to Chicago, and that rate is probably closer to 20-25% at Brown), but it’s definitely not bad. If you have great ECs and are an athletic recruit, then even better!

In any case, at this point, it would probably be wise to focus on making your essays superb, as that will be the make-or-break point for your application. Good luck!

Yes that’s my plan, thanks
