This is my first draft, so there are probably a few things to correct…

Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.

The dusty vinyl slips out of its sleeve; turntable and vinyl meet; the needle drops. Now, the cool, linear harmonies of Miles Davis trumpet fill the room. From the conscious tangibility of my bedroom Im taken back to 1959 to a New York club, with Miles and his Sextet. The opening murmur of the piano on So What has never felt so wanton. Coltranes sax fills the room. I sink deeply into my chair

This experience and others like it have been ingrained in my memory for years now; however, I never really thought much about them. As the years went on by I slowly started to realise the importance of these incidents, their influence on me, and how they have moulded me to become the person I am now. Miles Davis music created an inner space in which I could develop myself.

His music had a great effect on my appreciation of life and the beauties that come with it. I started to appreciate the simplicities of our world. The material world disappeared upon my first listening of his album Kind of Blue, and as a result my care and regard for materialism also started to disappear. This change in perspective has allowed me to concentrate on the important and disregard the frivolous aspects of life. I started to recognise the importance of art and human emotion; two things that I would have before taken for granted. How could a trumpet solo be so profound? How does it evoke so much emotion? His music and the questions I asked myself prevented me from getting caught up in the privileged bubble into which I was born. His music has allowed me to understand the realities of life, and that my situation should not be one taken for granted.

Furthermore, his work made me realise the influence of music. When I started to realise the musics profound effect on me, I started to think whether I could have the same effect on other people. In turn, this simple music evoked a determination to do something significant in my life. I wanted, and still want to be able to affect people in the same way that Miles Davis music affected me. Whenever I listen to his album Kind of Blue the swelling brass and triplet rhythms leave an indelible mark, and bring out this determination such is the power of his music. His music has inspired many of my ambitions from wanting to take up more musical instruments to focusing on my goals for future work. I want to be able to give to a community, be it a school, university, company or family the inspiration Miles Davis has given me.

Miles Davis influence on me has been nothing other than momentous. Being appreciative of the world around me and determination define me as who I am. Whats most striking about his musics effect on me is how much his music caused me to reflect about myself. Were it not for this reflective process I probably wouldnt be appreciating the world around me. I probably wouldnt have been as focused and determined to achieve for myself and for society. I am eternally grateful for what he has given me and for the inspiration he has provided. I hope that in the future I can give to society what Miles Davis has given me.

Thanks you! Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
