is my friend lying?

my friends dad said his son got into stanford even though he had a 2.2 hs gpa but had like a 3.8 college gpa from a community college which still isnt even that impressive but he said his son had a 34 on his act and that balanced out his bad hs career, said he had solid ec’s, etc and a good application essay…(keep in mind he applied AS A sophomore) so he only had 30 college hr’s…im not sure how to know if hes lying because he said his son is going to attend a different school which isnt as good because they are giving him more financial aid.

Connections? Money?

I wouldn’t say it’s incredible, but it doesn’t sound very true to me.

Is it possible? Yeah…

Is it likely? Hell no

no he doesnt have money thats why he said hes going to a different school

Then unless he has connections, it’s most likely a lie.

****load of legacy might make that happen

I don’t know that it’s impossible. For one, I know people who transferred to very reputable privates from CCs with similar GPAs. A 3.8 GPA from a CC is pretty good, and the trend of improvement only helps the student out more.

I don’t see why it’s so hard to believe.

Because its Stanford

No, it’s not so hard to believe:

I had a 2.3 in high school, and I still made it to Chicago, Rice, and Georgetown.

Another poster here had a 2.3-2.4 in high school, and made it into Harvard.

It’s very possible, and I and many others are a living testament to it.

Assuming that the student actually managed a 34 on the ACT, it’s not that terribly hard to believe. Remember that improvement of the GPA shows a lot to admissions.

Stanford doesn’t mean “impossible.”

It’s not impossible, but it is hard to believe. I don’t the that person at all and I’m sure Stanford has accepted applicants like that before, but that doesn’t mean that is a regular occurence.

There really isn’t a point to talk about this so I’ll just stop.

I dont find it hard to believe, i think it might actually happen… With a good essay and good college stats, anything can happen!

I don’t think anyone here actually claimed that.

There is a thread floating around here about transferring from a CCC to Stanford - some sort of guide. For 2002 (latest info on there, I believe) about 10% of CCC applicants were admitted to Stanford. So no, it is not impossible at all, but difficult.

Still, I doubt the 34 ACT was enough to offset his high school performance. He must have had something very impressive about him.

brand_182,

When transferring, it’s the upward trend that matters most. 3.8, 34 on the ACT, and good ECs? Yeah, that’s going to look really really good.

In this person’s case, the high school performance was actually a benefit…

well that is very nice to hear then. :)

ummmmmm

maybe I should’ve gotten shietty grades in high school for purpose then
