Is NYU going to become an Ivy League school?

I know this seems like a stupid question but today after school my two friends told me that NYU was going to become an Ivy League school. I didn’t believe them but since they were quite adamant, I decided to check it out. I didn’t see anything online about it so I am asking you people on CC.

I am pretty sure that NYU isn’t going to become a part of the Ivy League. After all, NYU is not even on the list of CC Top Universities.

But anyhow, does anyone for sure whether or not NYU is becoming an Ivy League?

P.S.:I also heard that Rutgers University at one point was offered the chance to become an Ivy League University but it refused. Is this true?

Thanks in advance.

Neither of those are true, the Ivy League is an old collection of schools, and it will not be changing anytime soon, as far as I know.

Do you know why they are called the Ivy Leagues?

Besides their academic reputation, it’s because they were part of a sports league. It’s similar like calling Michigan, OSU, Northwestern, Indiana, ect the Big 10 schools.

So no, it’s not going to become an Ivy League soon anytime soon.

Nope. Actually, I heard similar from my guidance counselor today, “it is so competitive it’s basically an ivy league”. ivy league is a sports designation

Except it’s not as competitive as an Ivy League. It’s competitive by all means, but not that competitive.

it’s only competitive because it is popular–with 35,000 applications, it’s just impossible for a private university to NOT reject a significant portion of them.

I think 10 years from now, you will probably see their admit rates at least below 25%, and the competitiveness through the roof(average kid being current stern caliber at least), but nothing will ever join the ivy league.
Ever!

HAHAHA. It’s not that competitive. Their SAT ranges are no where near the Ivy ranges…

Not to sound snobbish, but IMO NYU is nowhere as competitive as Ivy schools. The ratio is pretty steep, but that’s because it is very popular among HS students and many many people apply there. But the applicant pool is way lower than Ivy applicant pool in terms of stats, so someone who would at least be a competition in Ivy schools will have little trouble with NYU.

i think a lot of people like/apply to NYU because it is the attainable reach in New York City. Columbia these days is almost impossible to get into unless you early it.

The Ivy league is a sports league of similar academically challenging schools all in the Northeast.

Although NYU is in the NE and does have sports teams just as bad as that league, it will never get in on the academics.

Rutgers was never invited into the Ivy league.

There is something to Rutgers having almost been an Ivy; it is one of nine colleges established pre-Revolutionary war and the others may have been the Ivys-I’m not sure about that. But, yes, Ivy League really only refers to sports and many colleges are on par academically and have just a good or better reputation when seeking a job.

Quote from somewhere:

A Wikipedia entry falsely stated that Rutgers was once invited to join the Ivy League. Although that false statement was eventually removed from Wikipedia, it was not removed before the New York Daily News relied on it in this story:

You don’t have to define your college with your football team, but Rutgers long ago decided to give it a try. Back in 1954, when it was considered a ‘public Ivy,’ Rutgers might have joined the fledgling Ivy League and altered its destiny. But the school declined the offer - arguably the dumbest mistake in its history. Ever since then, Rutgers has scrambled to prove itself worthy of playing football with the big boys.

Yeah I agree with the above assessment, NYU is a great school but it’s not as competitive as an ivy. Though I have to say Stern may be close to on par in terms of admission difficulty.

Have you seen some of the kids who get into Rutgers? No way near an Ivy League-level school by any means.

NYU is nowhere near the selectivity of an Ivy and obviously it would never become an Ivy League school. The Ivy league, as many people have mentioned, is a sports conference.
