Is NYU Worth It?

I’m starting my college search, and I have always wanted to go to NYU. I love the idea of going to school in New York City, but is it all that it’s cracked up to be? Also, what do colleges mean by “science lab”? How can this be accomplished in High School? Thanks!

I think this is what you are asking about. Lab sciences are science courses where you are required to complete labs. Usually Chemistry, Physics, or Biology. At my school this is different from the courses like Earth and Physical Science or Human Anatomy.

Unfortunately, NYU is stingy with financial aid :/. Unless you’re rich, or they give you a lot of scholarship money, it’s probably not worth it…Still apply though! I regret not applying because of concerns over financial aid. You never know what will happen unless you apply!

agreed. a lot of celebrities and rich new yorkers go to NYU – seriously. they suck with financial aid and i think it’s the 7th most expensive school in the country… they give like 3 full rides to first generation people then thats it. stern is a great school. i would love to go to stern… i know a kid who got in (from canada) but he couldnt afford it… he tried crowndfunding some money but it failed.
i vote no on applying. waste of $70.

^ when you factor in cost of housing, food, social life, etc., NYU is the most expensive school in the country. As a New Yorker, I never understood the appeal. Until recently, it was always considered a mediocre school around here. Stern has appeal, but spending over a quarter mil for an undergrad business degree is not a sound business decision for most. If daddy has money to burn, what the heck. But if you have to take any loans, you should seriously look elsewhere. You can have the same careers coming out of much less expensive schools.

NYU grads lead the country in average debt on graduation. Even if you get good aid or can afford it, do you want to go to a school where so many of your classmates will be stressed out about finances?

There is also a great deal of discontent among the faculty, which has had a couple of no confidence votes in the president, who is accused of an excessive focus on foreign expansion and local development at the expense of the student body.

Not nearly worth the price tag, the only reason 80% of people apply there is because it is in New York.

Coming from New York City, I don’t really get the appeal. It’s not particularly great (Stern exception) and it’s expensive, and in my experience, it’s like EVERYONE that goes there that’s not in Stern is a ~fabulously~ flamboyant film major. Cough.

Twist: it used to be my dream school, so awk to the max.

Seems like a waste to me (minus Stern).

Yeah, the only reason it was my dream school for a few months was its location. That’s probably most peoples’ reason to want to go there. The dream of living in NYC… But it’s so not worth the debt. I’m sure NYC won’t be a great experience for a poor, debt-saddled college kid.

Depending on your grades, I’d also look at Barnard and Columbia if you really want to be in NYC. Pace is also in the city. Fordham is another more urban school to consider

What about NYU for tisch in the field of film production ? Would that be ‘worth’ it?

A friend’s D got her masters at NYU (financed totally by loans) last year in some sort of theater/film studies type program. She has not found a job in her field. She’s back in her home state working at a “for profit” university in an office position. She’s living w/ her boyfriend’s parents and can’t afford to live on her own or have a car due to huge debt she incurred at NYU.

honestly (as someone not from NYC ;)) NYU is an amazing school that is well known through out the world. but only if you can afford it. it’s definitely the most expensive in the country. considering how stingy they are with FA, I would even say that NYU is one of the most expensive colleges in the world.

you might also want to consider NYU’s other campuses though (like NYU Abu Dhabi or Shanghai). I hear that they give amazing aid, but Abu Dhabi has ~2% acceptance rate. people from all over the world apply.

No, my parents did not let me apply to NYU. I ended not applying to either NYU nor Columbia because NYC is very expensive.
