So yes, while some individuals can have different personal standards of attractiveness, and some individuals can have different personal standards of college prestige, it is pretty clear that certain schools are generally regarded as more prestigious compared to others by large fractions of the population who know or care about colleges …. and I’m not talking about those people who only know about colleges because of their SPORTS teams.

I think you have nailed the problem statement precisely. When Yale is tuition-free for up to the 89th percentile of American household incomes, it is truly not right for the media to spend so much (disproportionate) energy covering the issues relevant only to these super-wealthy elite schools, which BTW produce only a tiny fraction of college graduates.
