Is ranking students harmful?

I personally think it creates a cutthroat environment, not suitable for someone who most likely isn’t even old enough to vote.

High school students should work together as a community to grow, rather than competiting against classmates and fighting to one up them.

You can still select someone to do a speech at grad who has demonstrated tremendous social abilities and leadership abilities.

Colleges shouldn’t use ranking either. They can simply compare a students GPA to the average of that high school.

Because what does it do to students in competitive environments where there are like, 20 students with an UW GPA of 4.0? Are they gonna compete to “dethrone” one another? Maybe that’s an exaggeration, but I really don’t like it when high schools rank students.

Any thoughts?

Parents, what effect do you think rankings had on your child? Did they feel less than? Or did they bully students below them?

Yes it oftentimes is harmful since some schools won’t consider kids not in the top 10 percent. When one attends a prestigious magnet school, not being in the top ten percent is not fair since they could have been in another school. Therefore some competitive high schools usually do not rank but rather just provide GPA

it’s definitely harmful. Personal experience. No matter how close we are to our friends, when the topic of ranks come up, it’s touchy for everyone. My school is extremely competitive and it’s really hard to get into that top 10%. My rank kept falling after freshman year. It hurt my self esteem more than anything else.
