If i have a 34 ACT score but a 2090 SAT score, does that hurt/help my chances of getting into a college like Emory or Hopkins?

Both, as essentially all colleges, accept either test and assert that they rely on the score that they believe is the higher of the two

This question has been asked a million times. A simple search wouldn’t hurt.
They will look at the HIGHEST score you send in. Thus, with a 34 ACT, they couldn’t care less what your SAT is.

Most colleges in the Northeast like the SAT better than the ACT. While the difference is usually very very small and narrows down to personal bias, an admission officer once was quoted as saying if he got someone coming from some place like Conneticutt who only took the ACT and SAT II’s, he’d raise an eyebrow and wonder why he didn’t follow the SAT trend. Of course, it really is extremely minor and uncontrollable, so shouldnt be much of a factor.

Check for current information on this issue. There definitely used to be regional patterns of preference (although, even back in my day, I applied to a university with its disfavored test and still got in). Today, most college Web sites should say explicitly which test they prefer–and I have seen many sites that say the college no longer has any preference, but accepts both tests.

RBC, I’m curious where you’re getting your information. So far as I know, no college or university in the Northeast has a stated preference for the SAT over the ACT. It’s true that more students in the Northeast take the SAT than the ACT, but it’s my understanding that either test is equally acceptable. In fact, most colleges will accept the ACT in lieu of the SAT and the SAT II subject tests.

I don’t want this to sound like I’m contradicting tokenadult at all, but I’d like to add on.
I’ve never seen one schools website where they say they specifically prefer the ACT or the SAT. (Except in the case of some state uni’s, but even then, if you’re well above the average it doesn’t matter).
Anyone ever find some school where they specifically say they prefer one over the other?

I don’t feel disagreed with by post #7, but rather agreed with. I appreciate you expressing the matter in your words. To the best of my knowledge, these days most colleges don’t care which test you submit (which was the OP’s concern). If there IS a college that currently prefers one test over the other, I’d like to know which college it is, which test is preferred, and where in published materials the rest of us could verify that that statement is official and current.

You got a 34 ACT score. Save state schools, where a 2090 is still really impressive, few if any schools you’ll be interested in will state a preference for the SAT. Now throw yourself a party, a 34 is really awesome!

Oh, yeah, the OP has good scores for the colleges he mentioned.

Well, one shouldnt base any information of the admissions on a colleges website. Colleges are legally bound not to base admission decisions on race or religion, but in fact they do, but you won’t see that explicitly stated on a colleges website. The only reason I’d visit a college website is to see the AP policies and if I like the school or not, not to base anything of what I think my chances are on it.

What if you have taken ACT, SAT I + II’s?

Should you submit only one side (ACT or SAT) if it has a higher score?
I’m asking about myself:
ACT:35
SAT: 2120
SAT II: Physics 800,
Math II 800

Some colleges will make that decision easy by requiring SAT II scores (and your SAT I score will appear on the same score report).

Check what each college says. This is a good time of the year to meet college admission officers in person and ask them your exact questions at regional information sessions.
