So my friend who got into the Scholars program at UMD told me that if you didn’t apply priority decision then you couldn’t get into the Scholars program. Is this true? Also, I didn’t technically apply regular decision but here’s my situation:

I sent everything in by the priority deadline except I didn’t realize I had forgotten to send my SAT scores. Instead of reminding me about my missing scores (like many of my other schools did), UMD decided to wait until decisions came out to tell me they couldn’t offer me a decision because of my missing scores. (Okay I’ll take partial blame for that…) Anyway, I immediately sent my scores and called to ask when I would hear back and they gave me the elusive “in a couple of weeks”. So two things: 1) I’m worried that I won’t be able to get into scholars and 2) I’m worried I won’t get in because they won’t have enough room for me. Am I right to be worried or is this normal?

Mini-Stats (just in case):
Double legacy to UMD
SAT: 1960 or 1320 however you want to look at it
GPA: 3.82
Rank: Top quartile
EC: i’m fine

I am not sure about Scholars and the deadline, but my guess would be that is incorrect. Think about it…UMD is fighting for the best students, not all of the best apply ED…some are applying EA to other schools and waited for the results. I believe ED does have something about FA in regards to the ED app.
Scholars is a limited program, but the limitation is for ea program within Scholars. Your stats might be high enough to get in one program, but not another. At 1320/1960 and being in the top quartile that would put you IMHO on the cusp. I don’t know if 3.82 is w or uw. UW it will push you up, W and I think it is a no go…again it will be the program within scholars that you want.

Our DS is a legacy too, but to be honest, the points you get for that are nominal and should never be used as a belief that it is a hook.

I am shocked and amazed at the stats this yr from people who got deferred to spring semester. I am sure it is b/c UMD had again a higher number of appss than last yr so they can be very selective. With the economy going the way it is, next yr it will become even harder. UMD already is ranked no. 18 in the Nation for public universities and 53rd in the world, some of their subset schools like, Smith are even higher ranked. When you all graduate UMD will not be seen as a safety, which was how people saw it for many yrs. That image is becoming a vague memory.

BTW I am not saying you will be spring admit, I am stating that I believe those spring admits have great stats too!

Thank you so much! Yeah my idiot friend was gloating about how she got into scholars and how NO ONE from Reg Decision. Thanks again for clearing that up!
