I was trying to hit on this girl last week. When I talked to her last Wednesday, she told me she’s going back to school on Sunday since it was the last day of her Spring Break. I asked her if we can chill on Saturday, she said she’ll let me know “tomorrow”. And then tomorrow (last Thursday) came, she told me she has “something to do” at school and has to go back early. She said she’s going back on Saturday instead.

I figure she’s lying because what does she possibly has to do at school during spring break? Can’t be anything academically related. Also, she’s a top student and is also very organized. If she really has something that has to make her go back to school a day earlier, I’m sure she would’ve known a long time ago. But just on Wednesday she was telling me she’s going back Sunday. What can there possibly be during Spring Break that one doesn’t know about 3 days beforehand?

The only slight possibility is that there is a party on Saturday evening (and she ONLY found out on Thursday). But who go back early for a party when there are parties all around the year? And given a lot of people are away from school, the party probably sucks anyway. And her parents even said she always go back on Sunday. So I’m guessing she’s just making an excuse.

either she really has something to do in school, or she doesn’t and lied to you. either way, it sounds like she’s just not into you…i’d just forget about her.

oh, and this is coming from a girl btw. this is the kind of thing we say when we don’t want to hang out with a guy but don’t want to be mean and outright reject them.

Things is the wrong forum to ask for girl advice, that much is certain.

Yeah, if she liked you, she would meet you or figure something out.

She “lied” to be polite and spare your feelings, even though you could probably see through it anyway. So she had good intentions in her response.

By the way, I’m going to look through the unintentional comedy that is probably “He’s just not that into you.” Some girl showed it to me and the only page I read that she showed me, ironically enough, was some list about “polite ways to reject/ turn down a guy.” There were a bunch of “clever” (read: transparent and stupid) lies to politely turn down guys, like - I have to go to the bathroom, I’m going to get another drink, I’m seeing someone. You know, stuff that girls think is totally secret agent stuff. The last one was some joke like “I’ve evaluated you as a potential mate, and you are not up to standards. However, I don’t want to embarass you socially in front of people for fear of any repercussions.”

Although these “noble lies” have good intentions behind them, I for one do not like them. Simply because I find them patronizing. Like a girl might say at a dance party, “Oh, I have to grab another beer — but I’ll be right back.” It’s obvious that she just wants to “move on” but not hurt my feelings - but it’s just annoying. I’m not offended - just move on and don’t make up some lies.

In her head, she thinks she’s doing you a favor. Most people are too nice or simply don’t have the guts to say “I don’t like you, I never want to hang out with you, leave me alone.” sure, that would get the message across, but she’s trying to spare your feelings.

To be honest, you sound like the clingy type. How do you know what her parents said? Did you call up her Mom and ask where she is? Just let it go, buddy :)

…unless she really does have something to do and actually likes you. who knows?

Gold - I agree, whereas girls try to be more “sensitive” and say things like, “I like you as a friend, but…” I mean, if Men are blunt, it’s ok, but if Women are blunt, we get called a word that rhymes with blunt :)

Peter - I did read the first bit, really don’t have the energy/interest to read the essay, but so what? The guy makes valid points, but that’s not to say there aren’t millions of women out feel the same way about men, and think men are inferior, shallow, dumb animals controlled by their sex drive and look down on them and write essays about it (haven’t you met a Women’s Studies major?) ahh now someone’s gonna flame me…

I’d like to add that Tucker Max said, “I am not a misogynist…I love women. But I AM a sexist, in the sense that I believe women are vastly different than men and, according to the standards that men hold for other men, women are inferior.” that’s fine…in the standards that women hold for other women, men can also be seen as inferior. But we have different standards for the opposite gender, based on societal expectations and biological needs.

But what if she really had something to do on Saturday night? Maybe people got back and/or the people who never left for Spring Break wanted a party before school starts. And they called her to come on Thursday.

Is that not likely? I mean, I understand that it’s easy to say “she’s just not into you” based on the context of my question. But what I really want to know are some reasons why you guys think she’s lying. What’s the chance she’s lying? 60%?

Sure, there’s a chance she’s not lying, but i’m a girl and i’ve pulled this trick a dozen times, and I recognize it when I see it. This is classic nice-girl behavior, we don’t want to hurt the guys feelings by telling him he’s ugly and boring, so we use the “I like you as a friend…” line or if it hasn’t gotten that far, just blow him off by saying we’re busy. guys hit on women constantly, it rarely leads to dating. sometimes you’re just not into people. haven’t you ever been hit on by a girl who’s nice but you just don’t want her for whatever reason (looks, personality, etc)? this is not a big deal, you can’t expect every girl to want you and i’m sure you’re not into every girl.

Or, maybe she really does have something to do, maybe there is a big party, or she has to work on a paper, or she’s meeting with a professor for something…it could be anything. don’t worry about it :)
