With apologies if this has been asked/answered, but does anyone have experience as an Honors College student living in other dorms? My daughter loved the Campus Village and would prefer to live there rather than the Honor’s Residence. Is there any downside to doing so? TIA
The only downside is that different things will be convenient for her. Campus Village is amazing and so well designed, it would have given the Honors dorm a run for its money for my daughter too (she’s a junior so it didn’t exist her freshman year). After freshman year, my daughter stopped going to the little honors events because she was off campus and they were no longer convenient. I’d imagine it’s the same for kids who aren’t in the Honors Dorm - your U101 class won’t be on he first floor of your dorm, same for your advisor. She did know Honors kids who were in Patterson (the STEM LLC dorm) and Green Quad (the environmentally friendly dorm) and they seemed happy with their choice, and Campus Village has so much going for it, that maybe those conveniences win out over the Honors conveniences - your daughter would certainly still be invited to all the Honors stuff and probably be friends with kids living in the Honors dorm from class, so she’d be over there sometimes anyway.
Hi! I’ve really enjoyed reading your advice about the honors college. Our son starts next fall. I was looking for advice about room selection in the honors dorm. He picks on Monday morning and we have been looking for some insight in best rooms or even ones to avoid. He will have a roommate.not you have any advice from your daughters stay there it would be greatly appreciated!!
Hi! Yes, room pick is such an exciting time - makes going away to school seem so real! For picking rooms - do you have the schematics for the dorm? I can pm them to you if you don’t - those will really help.
There’s not a bad room in the place; there are a few smaller than usual singles - but your son has a roommate, so that’s not an issue.
There are definitely some extra large rooms (mostly in the corners) that everyone wants - more space, more windows, but they go very quickly!
The top floor has higher ceilings than the rest (around 5 feet higher) which people love.
There are also some doubles that have a private bath (no suitemates). And some doubles that connect to singles, so only three sharing a bath instead of four.
The rooms on the higher floors that are closest to Sumter, but face Blossom have a view of the stadium which some kids want.
The sizes of the windows are different, some are much larger than the windows in the sample drawing on the website (my daughter’s curtains barely fit becuase we went by the details on the website), if you look closely on the schematic, you can tell which ones have the smaller/larger windows.
My daughter and her roommate prioritized: (1) no suitemates/private bath; and (2) being on either the second floor or top floor (so either no need for elevator or yes elevator, but high ceilings) and they were able to get one of those suitemate-less doubles on the second floor.
Good Luck and let me know if you need the schematics!
Hi. I would love the schematics. My daughter has found three roommates and they want the suite with the connecting bath. On the website we cant tell which rooms are singles and which are doubles so we r very confused. How do you PM someone from here?
I pm’d you a link to a .pdf
Hi! This is great information. Thank you so much! He does have an early pick and I have the map of floor layouts. Don’t remember which room she was in or where the kitchens are located?
That’s do you remember her room number? Thanks again!
She was in CA240, but I can’t help with a kitchen.
Can you PM me the info as well? My daughter has 3 suitemates and the one with the earliest time is picking tomorrow for Honors residence. Not sure how much will be left by then, but what/where would you recommend for 4 girls? Guessing top floor potentially as the rooms will feel bigger with the higher ceiling? Thanks in advance!
Done!
Top floor would be great, but it will be harder with 4. Especially since you can only (or could only - maybe it’s different) book 2 at a time.
My daughter’s year was the first year that they did the “pick specific room” option so it was a big learning curve for everyone. You have to keep in mind that a lot of kids don’t pick roommates, and they will just choose bed 1 of a room and that eliminates the entire suite for a group of 4.
The other thing to remember is that you are statistically only seeing about half the available rooms - once a boy picks bed 1 of a suite - the entire suite is removed from view for any girls (and vice versa of course).
So if they aren’t happy with their initial selection, keep checking because sometimes just one boy needs to move to open a whole suite for a group of four girls. Or a pair of kids will move to be suitemates with another pair, opening up a suite. You do not give up your current selection when you go back in to check for something else.
This year I believe they can pick in groups of 4. I heard that in the past, I heard there was some kind of issue where 2’s were bullying other 2’s to get spots for 4 and it was problematic. Not sure of all the details, but to your point, I can see some very valid challenges with trying to find 4 together as some kids take single beds and boys rule out half the slots. They are prepared to shift into 2 groups of 2 to make it easier to find spots with at least their primary roommate selected.
I could definitely see that happening!
Glad they can choose as a group of 4, and that they are wiling to be nimble if needed. It’ll all work out I’m sure!
I wanted to come back and say that, so far, as an incoming Freshman, we are very happy with SCHC!
My son is registered for his Fall classes and every single one of his classes is capped at 20 students, all in person! (This was very important to him.) He is in three honors business classes, a language class, and the University 101 class. Great schedule, and his advising appointment went very well.
Signing up for housing was not a problem. He wanted a 4 person suite and got one no problem, and is starting to get to know his roommate and suitemates.
The communication from the school so far has been excellent. We head up for orientation next week and he is excited!
My daughter graduated from SC in spring of ‘23. She was I. The Honors College and Darla Moore Business School studying International Business and Finance. We can not say enough wonderful things about the program!
The HC provides smaller college feel within a fun, big SEC school. I would say it is the best of both worlds. As a freshman living in honors dorm provided some immediate social options. Some students chose to rush and some did not.
She definitely found the honors classes to be more enjoyable than the larger university wide courses. Also you get to register just after the athletes, allowing you the best access to classes.
If your student is studying finance, I would suggest pursuing finance scholars. It is a lot of work, but the professors really know the students and prep them for terrific jobs. By January I think all of the finance scholars either had jobs with top firms or were accepted into grad schools.
Highly recommend!
This is great information, thanks for sharing. My son (if accepted) plans to follow the same path (IB and Finance). Do you mind sharing what your daughter is doing now?
She is an analyst at a major banking group, planning to move to Europe when the opportunity arises.
That is awesome. Sounds like my son. Would like a job in Europe, preferably Spain. First things first though!
