Is spending extra time in electives a bad idea?

My main goals: Get into REUs, transfer to a private undergrad school, go to a top tier grad school.

I want to major in Chemistry, but first I need to spend a year getting my math up to par. Currently in community college, I’ll spend this time concurrently completing the general Biology series. After which point I will be able to apply for some of the REUs around that require at least 1yr of science being complete. At this point getting into these REUs will be my main goal.

I am in no hurry to graduate and I want to get the best and most thorough education I can.

Do you think it is a bad idea(relative to my goals) to spend extra time in CC taking other sciences like Biology and Physics and use that bought time to pursue REUs with persistance? I am very patient, and very determined.

If by extra time you mean 1 maybe 2 semesters at the most then I think it’s worth it. REUs seem like a great experience and I’d love to do one. I think it looks great on a transfer app too. I wouldn’t just hang around the cc taking random science classes and doing multiple REUs though.

You might want to identify possible transfer schools. Some may have limits on credits taken, etc. Make sure you have everything all planned out as best as you can.

thank you for the advice. As far as nearby schools in Oregon, I’m looking at Willamette U, U of Portland, Lewis & Clark, Reed, but will also apply to out of state top schools

Judging from your other post spending a bit of extra time at cc will give you the chance to raise your GPA too.
