Is studying Political Science abroad a good idea?

So I was thinking if studying political science in Canada would make me better trained than studying it in my home country. But I’m not sure if my study will focus on Canadian politics, which I think in this case won’t help as I’ll move back to my home country. Right or not?

Political science is the science of political behavior, so a lot of the topics and coursework is far more broad and applicable to more than just one country. For an example, at the University of British Columbia some of the core coursework is Introduction to Comparative Politics (where you talk about different political systems and how they evolved within different countries) and Currents of Political Thought (in which you read lots of classic texts on political and social thought that are widely applicable across Western, democratic societies).

However, there will definitely be some national and provincial classes - some of the coursework they also offer are British Columbia Government & Politics, Canadian Perspectives on Human Rights, and The Government of Canada. There is also some coursework on governance in the United States.

So it’s a mix - some general, broad political science theory and some specific information on politics and political science as applied to Canada and North America. (There are also some classes on international political science in Europe and Latin America.)

With that mix, would it be better when studied at home country and then preparing graduate degree abroad? Or is it worth it to start from an undergraduate level abroad?

There’s no real “better” in terms of content preparation.* In terms of getting into graduate school, I would imagine that North American-educated students have a better shot at North American graduate programs, but most political science and international affairs/relations programs have lots of international students at them.

*To be clear, I mean this in terms of country concentration, not university comparisons.

I’d say that generally if you want to work in the US political system that a degree from a US college seems like a better idea. You can spend a semester or a year abroad.

@intparent what I aspire actually is to work for Egypt’s foreign ministry, the Arab League, or an NGO like UN. But the biggest dream is to occupy a fine position in the foreign ministry, which is a long way I know.

A year abroad sounds like a great idea! But would a FULL undergraduate degree in US be better for my case? Or stay in home country focusing on Egypt’s politics with a year abroad?

What country are you from?

Egypt.

Okay, then my advice is different. I thought you were a US student, my mistake. I’d go to college in Egypt, honestly. But a year abroad from there seems like a great idea if you can swing it, too.

@juillet , I checked some Canadian Universities course details and I can see that as you said there is no single country concentration. Middle Eastern politics and other regions’ are also studied! I will apply to a political science program or two in Canada hoping deadlines for these programs are not yet passed

Do you suggest any good schools? (I’m a student Organization founder and class chairman so I think this may weigh good for political science  ) However my SAT is a little low; 1760. Any suggestions?

I’ll also apply to the American University at Cairo for political science to, If I chose it finally then I’ll make my way for a study abroad program. That’s my strongest choice.
