I’m a lesbian and I was interested in sweet briar. I haven’t really been able to find out if they are lesbian friendly. Is the staff accepting? What about the students?
From what I know it is a more conservative school which who lead one to believe that it’s not as lesbian friendly as other women’s schools for instance Smith or Mount Holyoke. If you’re looking for a women’s college that is, I highly recommend Smith.
I am going to go out on a limb and make an observation based solely on what I have read on College Confidential:
Check out the schools- it appears that there are many that are accepting, but there are equally some where the student expectation is conformance- that if you attend you will be expected to be the “right sort of lesbian,” and be properly active, etc. Not unlike other affinity groups, you may want to check how broad the limits of acceptability and tolerance are from both inside and outside of the community at each campus.
Again, no personal experience- just passing on a potential area of sensitivity (and I hope I am not trotting out an “obvious” observation).
