Is taking notes necessary in order to learn the material?

See title. I see taking notes as time-wasting, especially if I already have the review books. Is it possible to learn without taking notes? To…remember…?

That’s what those books are for lol, but doing your homework or practices in the workbook is necessary in my opinion.

Learning by writing is a very effective learning strategy. It is something that I use often in order to actively engage with the material.

depends on your learning style. I’m a kinesthetic learner and found taking notes as effective way of learning.

You can’t ONLY read the book. If you don’t at least take some notes or work through some problems, it’s all too easy to convince yourself you know material you don’t.

It depends on everyone’s learning style really. I can read history texts without having to take notes and still remember the content.

In high school, I only rarely took notes when it wasn’t explicitly required by the instructor.

As topics grew to be more complex, I found myself taking more and more notes, both during the lecture and while reading the text in question. The technique of simply reading and absorbing from the text and/or lecture simply wasn’t effective enough for me anymore at the collegiate level (though some classes were still exceptions to this new rule).

So I suspect your mileage may vary, but in talking to others, I’ve found that most folks hit that spot somewhere down the line where taking effective notes is a must. Learning how to do so while still in high school is significantly easier than having to master that trait independently in college.

I guess it varies depending on how an individual learns. But for me, I always take notes while reading the textbooks/listening to lectures.

It’s really different for everyone. I don’t take notes during class unless my teacher looks for participation. I’d rather go home, look over the pages we covered, and take my own personal notes. I feel that I’m soaking in a larger amount of knowledge that way. I sit in class and mentally note the subjects that my teacher emphasizes and then go home and try to take more notes about certain topics. Of course, this isn’t an absolute method for all people, but it has worked for me. Try to experiment a little and develop a study plan for yourself.

Best of luck!
