Is taking the SAT Subject test imperative?

I am a Junior and I am planning on taking my first SAT in January, before they change to the new format (so I can have both scores). In college I plan on majoring in Biotechnology and Bioengineering. So my question is is it imperative to take a subject SAT test (in my case, most likely Math, Chemistry, and/or Biology)? If I have a good SAT score, say a 2000+, do I have to? Especially if I’m tight on money.

I’m in Georgia and plan on applying to GA Tech, Duke, Purdue, Stanford, Washington, UCLA Berkley, UGA, Tulane, and Mercer.

Most of the schools on your list either recommend taking subject tests or REQUIRE THEM FOR ADMISSION (like duke). If you are tight on money, collegeboard can give you financial aid. (But how do you expect to afford huge tuitions at these schools if you cannot afford a $50 subject test?-only the big rich private schools like HPYS can give you complete financial aid no matter what-most of these schools you will have to earn some scholarships)

Thanks for the reply. I’ve already received about $20,000 in scholarship money from an organization, and my parents have saved up over the years, which will be enough for the first year and a half, if financial aid is granted. However, LATELY money has been tight, but it shouldn’t last very long seeing as my mother is getting a new job.
