Is the average grade usually the curve?

Is the average grade usually the same as the curve? or is it higher? I am just wondering because I’m a high school student and I keep hearing about harsh curves and I am wondering if grades are so low that they are all curved up or if in general the average is above the curve?

The average grade is usually calculated after curves are applied…

but for example in one of the hard science classes with a C+/B- Curve does that mean that is also the class average?

Without the curve, the average grade in many science classes would be a D- so a curve of B or B+ actually rescues many students from failing the course.

a friend of mine averaged like a 25 on his prelims and he got a C+ lol…

so yea the class is curved to ~B- for certain classes, ie intro chem.
so lets say the class average on exams is a 20, then those who averaged a 20 would get a B-. if the class average was a 90, then 90 would be the B- mark
