well, is it?

and while we’re on the subject, is the L in “calm” silent?

the 2nd one sounds wrong, saying: don’t be anxious, be cam… sounds totally wrong

hmm…I say it like it is. Not the L in “calm” though.

ah, i see

here’s another one, how do you pronounce: carrefour (it’s a french chain of supermarkets here)… is it: Karfoor, or kairfour

it’s pronounced (käm)

car- foo-r

what about Geant (also french).

…Are there a lot of French businesses in Egypt?

i say “ovvious” – as if there were 2 v’s.

I’m assuming you’re talking about géant? jae-aunt (like the letter “J” except you use the softer g sound)

In English you would say obvious. with the b. duh.

Actually, I know a lot of people who don’t prounounce the b.

No, the b isn’t supposed to be silent. I say it with the b.

I pronounce the “b” in “obvious”…

yeah i pronounce the b.

I pronounce the b.
and the l.
I don’t know french.

for those of you noticing you drop interconsonantals, are you from the NE? My roomie and I determined that the “north east accent” which supposedly doesn’t exist is the dropping of consonants in words. In particular words like twenty and Clinton, which are more often pronounced “twenny” and “Clinin” I think “calm” doesnt apply, but “obvious” might.

my english teacher says it without the B. (but then again, she doesn’t really know that much english; I asked her to translate Maritime Transport from Arabic to English Maritime she said it was “Sea Shipping”. I later proved her wrong when I looked it up)

The “b” in “obvious” is not silent. Check your dictionary. Yes, many people drop it, but many people say “Feb-oo-ary” and “nuk-u-lar” too.

I know people who pronounce the “l” in “calm” and people who don’t. Here’s the pronunciation guide from britannica.com:

Pronunciation: 'käm, 'kälm, 'kam, 'ko(l)m, New England also ‘k[a’]m/quote So either pronunciation is correct.

okay, thanx, this one is really bigging me.
Is Salmon pronounced: Samon or Salmon (with the L).

I think salmon is generally without the L.

I’ve never heard anyone say calm without the L.
I’m from the midwest (indiana).
