Is the Colleboard book for the new SAT accurate you think? Do you think the real test will end up easier/harder? (Any input from people that took the old one would help too!)

i dont think anyone will know whether it is harder or easier than the new sat. We just have to trust CB on this one. And i took the old sat (1520 760m 760v) the math is definetly a little harder and the verbal is about the same. It depends whehter u liked analogies or not.

even if it is not that accurate, it is as accurate as any test prep book will get as of now since nobody has seen a real version of the test yet.

“even if it is not that accurate, it is as accurate as any test prep book will get as of now since nobody has seen a real version of the test yet.”

That is not entirely correct! While none of the test prep companies has seen the real test yet, the same cannot be said for ETS/TCB. The tests and the book are written by the same people.

With the help of the results of equating sections, ETS will continue to fine tune the difficulty of the test. PR, Kaplan, and other publishing companies will continue to stay in the dark and take wild guesses. Despite the predictability of the test in the period of 1994-2005, none of the private companies could pull themselves out of their common mediocrity. Why would it be any different with the new SAT?

Xiggi, you’re right on the mark. Did anyone else notice that PR and Kaplan came out with their books BEFORE the CB put out its sample tests? Most of those prep books were a lot of guesswork.

I’ve closely analyzed all the new tests, and I’ve seen every old test ever released. In my opinion, the new CB book is quite inconsistent. Some practice tests are significantly harder than others. Some of the questions come from old SAT tests. Most are new. My general feeling is that the CB book AS A WHOLE is a good indication of the new test and level of difficulty. So make sure you do everything in the CB book. I usually suggest taking 4 tests timed, like real SAT, and breaking the other 4 into drills for practice.

Just a little side note about Critical Reading in the CB book: I’ve noticed that the questions in the new book require a little more abstract thinking than the corresponding questions on the old tests. On the old tests, the answer was almost always directly stated in the passage (though often in convoluted ways or with tough vocabulary.) The new book has questions that actually do require you to “infer.” I have no idea if this is because the CB didn’t vet the questions extremely carefully, or they are actually adding more of these question types to the new test. It will be interesting to see.

I’m waiting for the march sat people to give their comparisons! I’m not taking it until May, but I was wondering the same thing.

I think it should be pretty good. I’ve read through some of it, and I think collegeboard should know what it’s doing as far as standardized tests go. It’s not going to be all that different from the old SAT, really.

I find the passages a little easier in the new sat book, but the math is definitely harder. The problems take longer to find the answer, and the curve is a lot less forgiving. I was hoping for 800 on the old one, now I’d be very happy with 740.

i actually disagree with the general trend, and i say that the math section is actually EASIER than the old sat. the new math problems are a lot more straight forward than the old ones, especially since the quantative comparisons have been cut.

that being said however, the new curve on the math is BRUTAL (2 wrong = 760?!?!?!), which prolly makes up for the fact that it’s an easier test.
