It really just seems in particular that those who are wealthy have a far better chance in getting admitted to prestigious colleges and that the playing field is clearly unbalanced even though education should be the one place where the playing field should be balanced.

Yes, it is too skewed towards the wealthy. If you spend any time at all on CC, you will know that probably 90% of posts touch on this issue in some way or another. This is why colleges with hollistic admissions try to admit people of diverse economic and racial groups. The most selelctive colleges are trying hard to shed their image of being enclaves of elites. Some colleges have been more successful than others.
It’s not skewed at the point of admissions, it’s skewed at emphasis of education and education opportunity across a student’s life leading through HS.
It really all starts with elementary school, where often times low income students only have access to poorer performing schools which don’t prepare them well, so by the time they are ready to apply to college they can be at a distinct disadvantage.
