Is the EFC usually cut in half when a second child will be entering college?

Just wondering if I completed the FAFSA for my second child correctly. The EFC is half the EFC I got last year for my D who is now a sophomore. Most of the FAFSA information was drawn directly from the IRS link to my taxes, so I’m pretty sure I completed everything correctly. Thought I would ask to see if this sounds about right.

Yes…for FAFSA, your EFC will be 1/2 PER child.

BUT unless your kids attend colleges that meet full need…or the EFC makes them eligible for a Pell Grant, there is no guarantee you will see a dime of additional need based aid.

The FAFSA efc is cut in half or close to it when a second child enters college. This may or may not make a difference in your FA- depends on what the EFC is and which schools you apply to.

Thanks @thumper1
Yes, I realize it’s more complicated. And almost all of my D2’s schools require the CSS Profile anyway, so EFC is pretty meaningless, especially with divorced parents. But I was still kind of surprised to see half the amount.

I appreciate your quick response!

Thanks @twogirls!

Good luck!

For Profile schools…your family contribution will likely be more like 60% for EACH kiddo…not 50/50.

^ That’s correct.
