Is the Founders walk to classes worth it?

So basically question pretty much applies to any current students at NYU or any people who have visited Founders/made the walk to Washington Square or from it.

Is the walk from Founders really a pain the neck? Or is it just over exaggerated? And if it is, would you consider the walk a deal-breaker in choosing the dorm over say, a much closer Hayden? I’ve heard they have the nicest and newest rooms, and that the amenities are pretty nice (gym, swimming pool, Union Square food/stuff to do, Palladium/3rd North dining hall, etc…), but if the walk is really a killer, I would be willing to give it up.

And if you are a current student or have a son/daughter/sibling who is in Founders: Do they say that after a while you get used to the walk, or is it just a continual drag?

Thanks in advance.

The answer depends on how hardy you are and what you prefer in your immediate surroundings. The past winter was one of the most brutal with continuous snow storms and windy conditions (the worst for walking the usually not so bad 10 minutes or less to Wash. Sq. area). My son, who is in Founders did not complain about it, though he did say the windy conditions in NY made it really cold in the winter. I bought him really good quality snow boots, winter down jacket and underclothing (thermal underwear) for layering. That reportedly helped a lot.

He said he much prefers the location of Founders because he does not want the feeling of being in school all the time (which he would feel being at Wash Sq). Also, his language class has been held in a building that is actually closer to Founders than Wash Sq. This class meets 4-5 days for him, so it actually means a shorter walk for the class with the most frequent meeting times. Founders has been a very good choice for sonny. It does not hurt that he has an open city view and lights at night living on a high floor in Founders. He said he needs the big size of theFounders room to hold all his musical instruments.

Please note: Founders does not have its own gym or swimming pool (the closest is Palladium). Palladium food is good and he loves walking over to Third North to meet with his friends only one block away (with their kitchens and common areas). He loves proximity to Union Square and the subway at 14th St, making his forays into Brooklyn for musical/ cultural events very easy. Many lines converge at Union Sq.

We are from Texas despite that my son was born way up north (month of below 20) when I was finishing grad school. His mother kept asking him to buy an appropriate jacket. He never did. Walking from Founders to the Washington square “was not a big deal”. Agree with multiple layers. He never got thermal underwear. He would have chosen Founders again.

Abraxas, Haha, you conjured up images of my son’s friends who were dressed minimally in the cold when I saw them (in the eyes of a mother, gasp!). These guys seemed impervious to the cold weather. Being a planner and a mother, :), I had to buy the jacket for sonny. I doubt he would have done so himself. Correction: No, he did, he picked up a $10 Ralph Lauren dress coat (like a peacoat) from a thrift shop and said that was good enough.

I purchased the coat (a Marmot down parka) and mailed it to his dorm. Sonny complained it was bulky looking at first. But, later in the winter, he stated a few times he was grateful for the jacket which kept him warm against the cold. However, it was the thermal underwear that he kept praising.

Founders is awesome. HUGE rooms, and it’s brand new. The walk isn’t that bad at all. It’s in a great location!

It’s not bad at all. I lived in Goddard frosh year so you can imagine how awesome it was to have a 90 second commute, bed-to-desk, for classes and stuff, but it wasn’t ever a problem to visit my friends at 3N or Founders. Life is always a bit of a tradeoff. In this case you give up the convenience of a short walk for bigger, more spacious, taller buildings with a larger resident count (= more people to be around all the time). I never found it a problem. That being said, I’m an athletic, 6’1" male so it may be different for you.

The walk is not that bad. Its 10 minutes if you pick up the pace, and Founders is THE most social dorm of NYU. It has the cleanest, largest rooms for the most part, and some of the rooms have killer views. I live there now and I dont want to leave ! :(
