Is the grading for the AP Eng Lang exam legit?

Is the grading for the AP Eng Lang exam legit? Does it have reliable teachers? Is it well-controlled? Is there opportunity to impress readers with true insight? Are groupthink dynamics in play like there are with the SAT essay? Do they spend at least three minutes on each FRQ essay? Will good writers in school be recognized as good writers on the test?

For example I consider the SAT essay grading to be very illegit and wish colleges would just reject the writing score altogether.

It’s pretty much the same as every other AP test’s grading…

So no, it’s nothing like the disgusting SAT essay grading. That’s not to say there can be some unfair grading, but you can check some of the samples of AP central. Some of those 8/9’s are truly exceptional.

“Some of those 8/9’s are truly exceptional.”

when my AP english lang teacher was lightly talking about the exam at the beginning of the year he said about exams that were 9’s and 8’s… “HOLY CRAP DID YOU REALLY JUST WRITE THAT!?” “you could take those essays and place them without editing into any major publication in the world.”

my APUSH essays were garbage when i took it last year. I ended up getting a 4. (estimated scores of: 4,5,1) your essays don’t need to be that great to get a 4-5 on an AP exam.

And You and I can read an essay and know if it’s crap or not. The readers only read one essay so they know exactly what to look for. if you write good essays you will get good-ish scores. if you write a crappy essay you will get a crappy score. etc.

Thanks guys that’s reassuring!

Those 8 and 9’s on the AP website aren’t all so astounding. Sure, some of them are worthy of publication, but most of them are just what they are supposed to be, a good example of a first-year English assignment.

That’s absolutely not true. I’m sure there are a couple essays are that good, but my teacher is an AP grader and said he grades our essays slightly harder than on the AP test. Several people got 9’s over the course of the year; I myself got 2. As for an 8, I cannot imagine why an essay good enough for major publication without editing would lose a point.

Well for the SAT essay, a MIT writing director did a study and found that the score for an essay can be determined accurately over 90% of the time simply by looking at the length of the essay.

It is if they don’t lose your essays! -__________________-
