<p>This is sparking controversy, with a Colorado School Board trying to change the curriculum and the Texas State School Board considering banning the course. </p>
<p>I think that really depends on what you consider “anti-American” - for some people, that would be “anything that fails to consistently and proudly extol US activities and values”, for others it would be “anything that tries to hurt the US, including lying about what happened”.</p>
<p>I think one of the general problems in US education is that there is not an overarching structure that actually ensures that “everything” is taught at any given point. This kind of course should be diving deep into a few select topics, because they should already have learned Rosa Parks and Dwight Eisenhower in some earlier course. If they haven’t, then the problem is with that overall structure, not this one course.</p>
<p>You’ll never get a fair reading on anything like this unless you read the curriculum documents for yourself. For example, the claim that the framework doesn’t “mention” MLK Jr. or Rosa Parks doesn’t mean anything if the framework doesn’t mention a lot of specific people, but rather periods like “the Civil Rights movement.”</p>
