Wow…

Wow…

They might be answering only for Federal/State/UC grants. I think personal statements are sent to potential scholarship sources, which is why they have a whole section on the application about scholarships.

Scholarship (merit) =/= grants/aid (need)

@sega18 - well they said it’s not used at all and I asked them if it was used for grants and scholarships.

And not all scholarships are merit based I think about 5% are based on situation.

Hopefully that’s not the case where they don’t use it at all that’d suck :/

It is a pretty uncertain situation. Hm, I hope I win the scholarships I applied to :P

Lol I emailed back and asked a more in-depth question as well as asked the same question to UCSD we’ll see!

UCSB says they only use the FAFSA but if you checked off on the FAFSA foster you or ward of court status they will require additional documentation of that, still that they will not use the personal statement in determination of financial aid though.

If FAFSA uses status as foster child or a ward to help determine EFC why would they use the personal statement for determining financial aid? Other than for applying to EOP? I’ve never heard of any UC doing this - only using it to determine admission.

I don’t see financial aid being a subjective issue. Maybe for (outside) scholarships that aren’t dependent solely on academic merit and require an essay.

For outside scholarships exactly as you said. As well as for establishing a cost of attendance as an indepedent student.

And for UC grants as well.

Are you guys talking about the scholarship stuff you check off in the UC app? I remember the director of the honor’s program at my CC told us during an orientation that out of all the years she’s been dealing with the UC admissions process, she hardly saw a single person getting those. Maybe it’s just “bad” luck for the students at my CC?

Just any form of financial aid that the personal statement would assist someone in receiving at the UC’s that do not use it in the admissions process
