I’m debating what topic I’m trying to do. Should I choose a preset topic, or just do a free response/sample of writing. Are these option for a topic more of a trap? and if they would rather really prefer you write one of their essays.

If you’re talking about for UChicago, I asked the admissions rep and she said it’s given equal weighting as long as you can write a thoughtful and intelligent response.
I guess the preset prompts are there to help you, not scare you.

thanks Centaur, I was just talking about “generally” all applications. Most of them have a “topic of your choice”

No, it’s not. Think about it logically – why would they want to make an essay prompt a trap?

As long it fits as a personal statement, that is, the adcoms are able to gain a better understanding of you, it’s fine.
