Is "The Voice" Your New Vice?

I don’t want to see the sob stories. The show is called The Voice. I want to hear the participants sing. Most popular voice wins.

No, I wasn’t asking a rhetorical question, jshain. Since I didn’t watch that segment, I didn’t hear about the divorce either. From what you have said, it sounds like maybe it was about the divorce. Perhaps she keeps hearing about it from her dad, and the log cabin has some significance of a time when everyone was happy and they were a family. Though I would cry too if I had a beautiful log home and had to sell it, when I didn’t want to.

When they start in with the sob stories, I think, I don’t want to hear this, not again! But by the end of the story, I feel sorry for the person and even if they are not that good, I’m hoping that someone turns their chair.

I don’t think Blake would have turned his chair for Brenna had it not been for the fact that she is young and had the guts to sing a Miranda Lambert song and even had a tattoo of her song title on her ankle. I’m going to have to make sure I delay watching the shows so I can fast forward through the commercials AND the back stories!

She said her father built the house. I had the impression she lived there longer than to age 4, but I could be wrong. I liked her voice, anyway. I think the quality overall is high. I dozed off near the end last night, so I missed the last two or three guys.

You can pretty much pick the ones who are going home after the battle rounds (Briar being a notable example. She’ll probably end up paired with India: bye bye Briar.)

I wonder why the ones who do not get a chair to turn are not more emotional about it. Do they know ahead of time? Are they “hired” to play the part of the “loser?” I admire their attitudes, but still, I can’t believe 100% of the non-picked would be so happy about it.

musicmom, It is probably made very clear up front to not get upset if no one turns. The “tantrums” are for the “other” singing competition.

The one thing I have to say about the times the chairs don’t turn I actually gain a lot of insight into how knowledgeable the judges actually are about singing. They usually give pretty insightful commentary about the performance. If you go in hoping you get on the show, but get some really constructive helpful advice that’s pretty nice too. Unlike say american idol who let people on who are terrible, they don’t do the awful novelty audition on this show. I wonder how many we don’t see.

I thought it must have stung for one of the guys who didn’t get a chair turn last night to hear from Blake that he sang as if he had no heart in it - ouch!

Here comes Xig’s contrarian take:

  1. I liked Tuesday choices better than Monday's.
  2. I do not think that India is running circles around the rest. She is good and will probably pass a few rounds, but as others in her genre who competed in prior years, will find it hard to deliver week after week.
  3. So far, this could be a promising year.
  4. I wish they'd retire Adam. His antics are getting old and more annoying every year.
  5. It would be fun to have a season where the judges get the singers by turning their chairs first without the discussions. That or having a maximum number of turns allowed!

@2VU0609 It looked like it stung, but IMHO Blake was exactly right about what was weak about the performance.

As a former aspiring dancer, that’s hardly the harshest thing I’ve ever heard said in an audition.

Because we see mostly the singers who make it, I think we may underestimate the number of singers who don’t get chairs to turn. If they are told up front that only 15-20% of the contestants get chairs to turn ( I’m just guessing, as I have no idea), it might make it easier to handle the rejection. Sort of like the lottery schools.

And there’s a THIRD group: chairs that turn but we only see a few seconds of their audition where they make it through the blind audition. Are these singers who production deems marginal? Or, are these singers who production wants to sneak into the battle rounds to increase the drama, or keep things more uncertain for us viewers?

^maybe those are the talented ones being punished for having had happy lives:-).

I enjoyed tonight’s show, but I can’t remember anyone’s name! I liked both of the girls in the first battle. Loved the girl who sang with Christina.

Yep, I thought that first battle was incredibly even. One singer was named Mia and the other was? And I too enjoyed the duet with Christina. She was named Caitlyn.

First off, I like Christina’s hair. She looks great.

I liked the two guys at the end…and the woman that sang with Cristina. I liked Mia too.

Loved all the battles. They were really good. I don’t know how they choose sometimes. Figured that Mia was going to get chosen, as her voice is so interesting, but glad the other girl was stolen. Knew the prison guard lady was going to win, she was amazing, but bummed that the FedEx guy didn’t get stolen. Surprised that Joshua didn’t win his battle, but glad that Adam stole him.

jonri, the “other” girl, who battled Mia Z, was Ashley Morgan. Both singers (only) got 2-chair turns and both from the same coaches-- Blake and Pharrell. I thought Pharrell made the right choice but am glad Ashley got stolen (with 3-chairs all wanting to steal her!).

I think the guest coaches add a lot to the battle round segment. They are:
Pharrell- Lionel Richie
Adam- Ellie Goulding
Blake- Meghan Trainor
Christina- Nick Jonas (tomorrow night)

Good show tonight, with a combo Blinds and Battle Round. Was a little surprised that Vance got a 2-chair turn in the final night of the blinds and that rocker Hannah got Blake to turn his chair.

I agree with you on the Blake’s last pick, Hannah Kirby. I didn’t think she was anything special and loved how the other 3 judges were encouraging Blake to pick her. It left me wondering if they just wanted the blind auditions to be over or if they are all teaming up against Blake.

Did anyone think that Adam purposely teamed up one of his strongest singers (the prison guard) against one of his weakest singers? Is that how you would play the game?
