Is "The Voice" Your New Vice?

for the most part, i thought the girls were all a little screechy. I would not buy any of those songs.

I kind of want this to be over; although i’m getting tired of it, i’ll watch it to the end though!

Kimberly’s performance was, I think, probably the best. Her outfit was better than usual, and I do think that, despite my not having a warm feeling about her all along, she may be the most talented singer technically.

India took a very tough song (because of who sang it), and did only ok. I don’t think it fit her voice. I’d like to hear her sing some Karen Carpenter stuff, which I think would fit much better.

Josh stayed in what I think is his natural “Paul Simon” mode, and had a song that fit that. He has a “fresh-faced” appeal, despite being older.

Korey did better than he usually does, I think. I’m still disappointed that Blake went for clean-cut instead of “outlaw” when he jettisoned the Beckley WV kid, but maybe he knows better. I never thought Craig Wayne would win last year.

Overall I don’t see clear cut outstanding performers. I’m still looking for someone to match the skill and ease and appeal of Danielle Bradberry and they’re not showing up.

Well, to each his own. Danielle Bradberry is not my idea of something to aim at. I definitely know our tastes differ when you talk about singing the Carpenters’ stuff! (Although I think you’re right that it would suit her.)

I’m getting frustrated with India. She is, as Christina said in the blinds, “a vocal beast,” she’s gorgeous, she has everything it takes to succeed, but she doesn’t seem to have an identity. Is she a natural backup singer, like Judith Hill? Also a beautiful woman with a wonderful trained voice who, one would think, should have been able to cream the competition.

I hope Hannah and Meghan are the ones who go home...they were my least favorites along with Koryn and Corey.

Corey is cute, but so average as a singer. Koryn has a powerful voice and an emotional style, but her performances seem repetitive to me. Josh was better this time, but I don't think he'll survive more than another week.

I liked India's version of OTR, but wasn't blown away. Would love to hear how she would sing it in a studio session, with pros guiding her interpretation a little to shape it better. That could be a stunning recording.

Same with Sawyer's take on SM, which I enjoyed, but would be even better coming out of a studio with professional guidance to smooth it out.

Kimberly impressed...I think she could end up in top three.

I think both the show and the comments here are moving in that uber predictable pattern. More than anything it turns on our different appreciations of song choices and perhaps appearances. As an example, gorgeous is usually applied to outfits and not the voice. But the beauty of this discussion is that we look at different things and hear very different things.

As far as yesterday, after FF again through several parts of the show, I still think it was hardly a good night, except for Corey and Joshua. Not that they were remarkable but that both found (again) the groove that works for them. The girls … well, you have two glorified backup singers. One with personality and the other without any. The first is accomplished and the second one could be accomplished if she ever found an appealing genre. To be clear, I do not think that India was ever THAT good on the show and could have gone home a couple of time. The rendition of OTR showed all her talent (if you can call it that) and all her limitations. Bottom line? She is massively overrated. Just as Kimberley is. None of those two stands a real chance to win … if history repeats itself.

What will be next? Joshua should stick with his pleasant and syrupy voice and ignore Adam who will try to change things around and probably doom him. Adam is not totally wrong if winning is the objective. A limited singer who is just pleasant on the eye and ear but boring should not win the Voice. Doomed if you do and doomed if you don’t. Staying in his narrow range might get him in the final 3-4 but not win.

Blake knows what he has to do. Hannah is the sacrificial lamb and will be toast this evening. Time has come to do what it has done best. Focus the CW on Corey and … take a number of risks with Meghan as he did with CWB. But please NO MORE Brit songs from last century. People go home with the Beatles and the Stones! From now on, he can grab his shares of votes by picking choices people want to hear. In the end, Meghan has the chops to be the next CWB. She isn’t Danielle who, by the way, was extremely good and marketable, contrary to an opinion expressed above. She remains one of the best winners, if not the best of all seasons. Like it or not!

Koryn? She butchered that Keys’ song and her own rendition was very poor. It was almost Joey or Jax like. I guess that is what 17 years old do but the mentors should have stopped her. She should have stayed with the Alicia version and she should be save. Alas, she is not and she was the worse last night in a tight race with … Hannah and India.

So here you have it. Those three should be going home this week or the next. And that leaves a reasonable final five that matches the previous editions. It will be Sawyer’s to lose (duh) because he has remained consistent throughout the season, and his small hiccups forgettable. Fwiw, he could sing the Barney tune and people would still vote for him. All in all, I think everybody wants him to win and hope he moves onto a great career. In those terms, people like Kimberley should do well, but it will not be as a lead artist. India should find some Broadway show where she could have a career in that obscurity. The CW and quasi CW singers will have a boost or reboot in their career, but it should be limited.

Well, I disagree with you regarding Danielle. Like it or not! I don’t think that your personal opinion is The Word of doG in this matter.

When I evaluate these singers I am thinking about whether they could have a CAREER. That means that they have to be capable of doing music videos and live shows, as well as sounding good in a studio. I don’t think only in terms of listening to them on the radio. Since virtually everything they do is a cover, and an actual career would involve original songs that are written for or by them, one also has to get some idea what they would do in terms of making song choices and shaping future songs. Generally-speaking, covers are going to be more immediately appealing than new material because a) they are a pre-tested product that is already successful, and b) familiarity is in their favor. How is this person going to work with new material?

So far, none of the contestants has been Bruno Mars: a person capable of blazing across the pop scene in all ways. Some of them have been very strong niche players. Some of them are to young to have fully developed the capability.

That is why people have the right to different opinions. Let it be known that I am hardly trying to change yours. I am only expressing the view that the young girl did well, and that she was able to parlay her The Voice success into something meaningful, and this despite her young age. We might go through the list of past winners to “check” on this. This said, it might not always work well as a match to our own opinions. For instance, I still think that Cassadee Pope is a glorified cruise ship lounge singer, but plenty seem to disagree with me. And THAT is OK in my book!

As far as the objective --and success-- of the show, I also think it is all about bringing some entertaining value -including spirited debates-- than it is about finding the next great artist. This show is not about finding the next Leona Lewis but all about having people tuning it and appraising the quality and possible talent that is looming underneath the swath of performers who have found success. And, fwiw, when people like Tessane Chin win and an untalented kneeling Chamuel finishes close to the top, or even a “reborn” CWB, you have to admit that there isn’t much coming out of the United States at this time. And this explains why the most entertaining part is the format, and at times, the idle chat and banter of the judges. We tune it and do it even when the evening is a trainwreck of utterly boring last the past weeks.

In the end, to go back to Danielle, I think she was remarkable for her age and genre, and the same applies for Sawyer. So far, I think that those two are a breath of fresh air in a sea of mediocrity of rethreads or Broadway wannabes!

We can all agree that the Voice is still looking for their equivalent of Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood but, agreeing with xiggi, the show has an array of entertaining and unique components-- unlike any other singing competition on TV. I am hopeful that a big star will eventually emerge but, if that doesn’t happen, it is still a very enjoyable show.

I’ve got to learn to lower my expectations. No one really impressed me last night, but Kimberly made progress.
Her coaches seem to be trying to get her to show more emotion. Maybe that’s her problem. Sometimes she just seems so aloof.

Just checked the i-tunes ratings:

2 Simple Man - Sawyer

8 Fields of Gold -Joshua

11 Creep - Kimberly

23 When I See You Smile - Corey

26 Over the Rainbow - India

28 Something - Meghan

38 Girl on Fire - Koryn

40 We Don't Need - Hannah

This season has been oddly dull. Ever since his blind audition, it’s been clear Sawyer will win and that, with Pharrell to run his career, he even has a chance at real stardom. So I feel like the whole season has just been waiting around to see if he’ll fail in some way. A “it’s his to lose” trajectory isn’t all that interesting. I much prefer when a dark horse comes to the fore and takes a singing competition by surprise.

Wish I could understand Corey’s persistence. He’s not much of a singer, has zero personality, and has such bland good looks. I guess the country vote will come out for anyone.

He’s also probably getting his fair share of the “Blake boost” with the voters. Not sure if Hannah would still be around if Blake wasn’t her coach.

The voting deadline is the one that matters and it could end up making a difference tonight. Hannah and Koryn appear to be doomed, but it would be nice to see Koryn saved and India sent packing, if the last two weeks entered in the final consideration. If only this week matters, the rain and fire girl has no chance. She could not have been worse last night with a song that should have been easy to navigate. Why do those kids think great songs have to be rearranged into something awful?

Here is how the night’s eight performance numbers were positioned at the 12PM ET voting deadline:

  1. Sawyer Fredericks – Team Pharrell – Simple Man
  2. Joshua Davis – Team Adam – Fields of Gold
  3. Kimberly Nichole – Team Christina – Creep
  4. Corey Kent White – Team Blake – When I See You Smile
  5. Meghan Linsey – Team Blake – Something
  6. India Carney – Team Christina – Over the Rainbow
  7. Koryn Hawthorne – Team Pharrell – Girl on Fire
  8. Hannah Kirby – Team Blake – We Don’t Need Another Hero

I’m not sure if I’ll ever get any interesting tidbits, but I do know someone who works on the show. They are required to sign non disclosures so I don’t get much dirt. I will dig after the season is over.

I would like to see Hannah and Cory go home tonight.

I think there is a good chance Hannah and India are going home tonight.

Corey reminds me of Wonder Bread. Bland as can be.

Bummer that Meghan was ahead of India on itunes.

I listened to songs like Girl Crazy and the River song.

The original artists blow the Voice contestants out of the water.

“Corey reminds me of Wonder Bread. Bland as can be.”

Sure, but I’ll bet you loved Wonder Bread when you were a kid.

No. I hated Wonder Bread. Always. Echhhhh…

Mmm, add some frosting, and it’s like cake. Then again, maybe it’s all in my imagination. My parents were early generation health food nuts.

Ok…busdriver11’s post doesn’t sound appetizing.

Where are the east coast posters? What is happening?

Joshua is the first one saved.

Pro performers and I won’t embarrass myself trying to name them, I had no idea who either of them were so far. But India and Kimberly sang with the first guy. Lots and lots of filler.
