Is "The Voice" Your New Vice?

WOW - Although the instant saves have been fueled by brain dead and deaf people, the voters have been mostly correct. It would take two nutty weeks in a row to have Meghan in the bottom two this week. Actually, she had the best week based on her two songs.

De gustibus! Or a bad TV set!

I think Meghan should go home…Meghan or India. India is going home.

Meghan is staying. She is doing second best on tunes.

I can’t believe Sawyer sang that second song. Crummy song for him. I like Sawyer’s version of Shine On. Sawyer is winning anyway…as he should.

This season is like the season where the young country singer won with Blake. Sawyer all the way.

I did like the way Joshua sang In the Life…another great song.

I wasn’t blown away tonight.

I fell asleep. That must say something.

Another James Taylor fan here who thought Meghan beat Steamroller Blues to a pulp and then took a machete to the remains. I had to go listen to the original to wash the screeching out of my ears. She did a much better job on Amazing Grace, but still has issues with modulation and subtlety. Her pattern of one good song, one not so good one, seemed to run through the whole bunch tonight.

If the iTunes sales are any indication, Kimberly is on her way home.

Have any singers past the age of, say, 25, ever had real success after appearing on a TV singing competition? I can’t think of any. Sorry to say, but I don’t think Meghan, Josh or Kimberly have a snowball’s chance in hell of forwarding their careers much beyond what they already were before the season started, even if they should somehow win. Popular music is a young person’s game.

I just listened to James Taylor’s version of Steamroller Blues which was excellent. Another James Taylor fan here.

I think Kimberly will be saved if she ends up on the bottom. I couldn’t even listen to that second song she sang. I had to turn the channel.

ITunes was NOT a good indication last week … unless it was as rigged as that India save.

Fwiw, I have no idea what those folks heard in Sawyer’s songs tonight. First one was a snooze fest and the second a hopeless mess. Sawyer will probably win but he surely not solidifies any leadership he had.

India is Deanna redux without the legs and with an uncontrollable vibrato. I’ll have to retract the Broadway quip; she is worse than that.

Funny how Kimberley is faring poorly this week when I thought she’d score points with the rocker’ crowd. I never liked her a bit but I am surprised by the iTunes so far. Anyhow, I am not sure how India could survive weeks of mediocrity.

I wish India could somehow develop some of Koryn’s emotional delivery and Koryn could have India’s intonation. Individually, something is amiss in both. Koryn is just a kid, but she has that nasal quality that drives me bonkers.

I want to adopt Sawyer… and become his business manager. Great round 1. Agree with all who think he “can’t miss”. Has anyone had a better, more consistent iTunes ranking week-to-week in previous seasons?

Tonight’s placement for me:

Sawyer (by a mile, except for those annoying dancers)
Kimberly
Josh
Meghan
India
Koryn

Random thoughts: For me, in retrospect, Mia Z. would have been a better choice than Hannah. Cody Wickline would have been an upgrade over Corey.

I actually thought Dirty Diana was a better choice than Kimberly doing Tom Petty in round 1. But, who am I to argue with dstark. He has his finger on America’s pulse more than me.

Jshain, No. I don’t. I really don’t.

If I did, Meghan would be gone already.

Jshain, I also like your random thoughts. If I knew anything, Mia Z would have lasted longer and I never liked Corey.

I couldn’t stand Meghan tonight.
The public loves her. Both songs she sang tonight are doing great on itunes.

I could not agree more with “I wish India could somehow develop some of Koryn’s emotional delivery and Koryn could have India’s intonation. Individually, something is amiss in both. Koryn is just a kid, but she has that nasal quality that drives me bonkers.” as I could have written it myself.

Although I did not like Kimberley second song on a personal basis, I thought she would do well with it. after all, she had a Chamuel kneel people lived so much.

But I cannot agree with the remaining comments. Do not get all the love for Sawyer tonight nor the dislike for Meghan, who had both the best song tonight and the best combo. Fwiw, Joshua had a respectable second song but an awful first song – like most tonight. I like Sawyer but his Momma song was insipid and boring. THAT song might not have gotten him through the auditions.

More of the same and he might end up like that bespectacled tattooed dude who came back a few weeks ago. Running away with the iTunes and collapsing at the end. I like Pharrell but he can’t afford more Adam like misses like tonight. Boring first inning and a crazy scene in the second. The kid is better than that crap.

Some are not willing to admit he is resting on his laurels and not improving at all.

I agree that my girl India may have hit her limit with this show. I think she was pushed into the ballad box by the producers and they are keeping her there. But, agree that her extra vibrato is not good … It almost sounds nervous to me. I still like watching her perform … She is still so young and developing.

I am going to disagree with all on the song Sawyer did with all the dancers. What Blake said was true … With all of the dancers moving so much you do realize how still,Sawyer is when he sings. When Sawyer does move, and he did to go to the front of the stage and then back, he has this calm swagger that is pretty cool. Also, at the end of the song, he turned to the dancers and looked them in the eye and said “good job.” That was adorable, so I can see why he is piling up votes, assuming with the Tweens that think he is cute and kind.

Didn’t like Joshua so much tonight, Kim was okay. I am still liking Meagan, but I agree she gets too loud too much of some of her songs. Coryn was nasally tonight, but she keeps bring it.

Do any of us “mature” types actually vote? I think I have voted once in all the years of Idol and The Voice.

I just want the belters to stop belting so freakin much. Okay, we get it. Let’s see you all take it down a notch, this isn’t a vocal gymnastics competition.

I really only like Joshua’s voice now. I don’t get the adoration for Sawyer. India, Koryn and Kim are going to split the screaming singer appreciation votes and could all be in trouble.

Meagan is this years Tessanne - the good singer who looks about 20 years older.

@eyemamom I noticed her pitch problems, too, especially in rehearsal. In her final performance of Free Bird, she didn’t hold any of the notes. Maybe that’s why. I didn’t like Dirty Diana at all, especially after the crotch-grab at the beginning.

I thought Meghan should have been singing “Screamroller”.

Koryn has a very fast vibrato that makes her sound breathy. She is invested in the emotion of the song, though.

I liked seeing Sawyer acknowledge the dancers. I never understand the performers who totally ignore what is going on around them on the stage.

xiggi, Interesting how we just were in more disagreement this week. I actually liked Josh better in round 1, except near the end of that performance. I thought Meghan sang her 1st song all at the same volume. Would have liked her to change it up a little more. As far as Sawyer goes, I wouldn’t say he’s “resting on his laurels and not improving at all” as much as I’d identify him as knowing what kind of artist he wants to be and consistently delivering that style. Not sure there’s a whole lot of room for improvement, compared to most of the others.

Had to repeat this hilarious sentence.

Would a woman singing like this make it on The Voice?

Well, it is more nuanced that that. Again, why escapes me is the complete adulation of Sawyer’s performances and the hate of Meghan. To be clear, I still DO like the kid and his style. While I do not think his songs were that great yesterday, he is still leading the pack quite easily.

Regarding Meghan, it is not that I liked her first performance a whole lot. She started too high and paid the price for it. Some cannot stand her braying or screaming and I am usually in that camp. She does however mask the shrieking with a better than average pacing and elocution. Compare that to the ones who offer cheap vibratos and poor adlibs, or punt the last note (like Koryn did when she ran out of notes at the end)

In the end, I do think that Sawyer could do better and wrap it up with less obscure songs AND staying in his wheelhouse. He does NOT have to change much – just get the advice to pick more memorable songs, stay away from landmines that expose his imperfect voice, and above all, stopping to move around with dancers. Fwiw, that is what killed Josh Kracjik years ago.

Again, I think Sawyer is still number one. It is the rest of the field that goes up and down. And I simply do not see how Meghan could be behind the Off-Broadway girl and Koryn, or based on yesterday overall performance Kimberley. And that leaves Joshua. We will have to disagree on the U2 song – I think that he was (again) brutally exposed as a very limited talent with a narrow wheelhouse. And that is the immediate opposite of Meghan whose wheelhouse is as wide as Texas.

IMHO, if Blake wants to win, he should saddle her in the CW style and abandon all that rock cum belting non-sense and let her ride to the final three. In so many words, do a CWB all over again. His voters will respond in masse as the others split the votes. And, fwiw, if there were a finale with two guitar players who have to stand still and deliver monotones … anything can happen if one pushes the very popular songs you hear at the CMA!

I definitely see a parallel between Amazing Grace and Old Rugged Cross. But CWB delivered it MUCH better.

You KNOW I agree here. (Been saying it as often as I have been saying Koryn sounds nasally.) Meghan has made some very questionable choices with regard to genre. I don’t think she can blame anyone but herself. She seems to be wanting to throw lots of “stuff” against the wall to see what sticks. I personally do not think she really wants to make a CW presence in the music scene but, if she did, she would be faring much better in all aspects-- including her post-show success.

Also agree with all you screamer-haters when it is used too often… which it has. However, I still think between Kimberly and Meghan, this season has two of the best vocalists, from a range perspective, that the show has ever produced.
