Is "The Voice" Your New Vice?

Bindi was pretty awful. There were much better ones he could have stolen last round.

Don’t really know what’s happening yet out on the West coast but feel Blake wasted his steal last night in taking Jason Warrior. Great kid but very nasally in his power range, to me. Hoping Billy won. Am worried that either Brendan or Nolan, both on my team, went home. Hopefully Alicia or Miley stole one of them. If I was to guess, I would say Brendan. These coaches seem to prefer artists that they can help grow the most and Nolan seems to have reached his potential already.

I don’t think Brendan and Nolan have sung yet. They must be coming up next week.

Thanks musicmom, watching the performances now on NBC.com. and see now that thise 2 will be competing against each other next week when the knockout round wraps up.

Oh my goodness, poor Bindi. The video of that performance will haunt her forever. Her very first note was super flat and she never managed to get back with the music. I’m not a singer so I don’t know how hard it is to recover from a bad start, but I’m thinking maybe she couldn’t hear the accompaniment well enough to find the key.

Billy Gilman was disappointing, but I think his comeback story and coming out story will take him far.

I want Belle Jewel’s skin and eyes.

Back to last night, looking at Wé’s outfit and affect, is it fair to assume she’s gay and that was the story behind the school bullying?

I’m enjoying watching Alicia’s and Miley’s reactions to the better singers. Music seems to reach them both in a deep and meaningful way, and it shows on their faces. I also like it when a knockout competitor is totally taken with the opponent’s performance. Guess I just like that touch of actual reality in my reality TV.

I would like to see stylists dress We’ similar to how she looked during her Faith and Tim coaching session. She looked great!

I am trying not to comment about appearance since this is supposed to be about the voice, but my first thought about We in the knockout round was, “She looks like Richard Simmons tonight.” And seeing her standing there with Carson, I realized she is taller than I first thought. I guess her little-girl voice made me think she was petite. That girl can sing, though!

I missed the part about Billy’s coming out story. But I did notice the wedding-type ring on his left hand last night and wondered if he was married.

I’ve never understood this show. To me it’s a glorified kareoke contest with people that will never be heard from again. To each their own I guess…

Iron Maiden, This show is uniquely different in many ways from other singing competitions. If it weren’t, it wouldn’t have made it through 11 seasons and counting.

Here are the current iTunes rankings from Monday and Tuesday’s Knockout Rounds (current coach):

Sundance, The Climb, #44 (Blake)
Billy, Fight Song, #47 (Adam)
We’, No More Drama, #68 (Alicia)
Christian, Superstar, #89 (Alicia)
Belle, Don’t Dream It’s Over, #149 (Miley)
Josh G., My Maria, #159 ((Adam)

Final knockouts resume next week.

@jshain, what kind of device are you watching on? I watch on my laptop–with my great bluetooth speaker  --and there are no apps involved at the NBC website. Sounds like you are using a tablet of a phone? Try watching on a laptop or desktop, if you have one.

I agree that Bindi pretty much massacred a great song choice. Too bad. Christian has a big voice, but I’d rather listen to Belle on a regular basis, so I’m happy she was stolen.

I was reminded once again why I immediately chose Courtney for my team during the blinds. Wow. My other team member, Billy, is just a super vocalist. Love to listen to what his voice can do.

Yes, Billy is phenomenal. Not the song I would have chosen for his voice, but I understand it had meaning to him.

Consolation, I’m watching on my iPad with Apple earbuds.

I love Ali Caldwell’s vocal ability. For my taste, she’s the #1 dynamic diva on the show. She hasn’t done well on iTunes. Maybe song choice related, maybe not. The one that I’m ready to put on my team, however, is Darby Walker. She is all over YouTube. I have no other females on my team except for We’. I also do not have an artist from Team Blake at the moment so will probably add country artist Sundance. Had him then gave him up. Sound familiar?

Edit: Some of you added Darby Walker early-on. Kudos!

Where’s eyemamom this season?

My team now stands at:

Courtney 23 days
Billy 35 days
Darby 29 days
Nolan 29 days
Sundance 2 days (I had him on my team originally, and took him back when Dave was eliminated.)

I’m going to be really interested to see how Nolan and Darby do next week, because there are several others I’m rally taken with, and there could be more reshuffling. Does anyone remember when the teams are frozen?

Consolation, I thought, but cannot swear to it, that the teams get locked once America chooses their top-2 favorites from each team AND the coaches then select one more, totaling 12 in all.

Jshain your iTunes list proves my point. All covers = kareoke. Is there one person from any season that has gone on to success with original material?

It’s fine if this entertains the masses but lets not kid ourselves.

Iron Maiden, Your point has been duly noted. It has been made at least a dozen times before on this thread. I believe most of the wonderful people who contribute to this thread do so because they like the show format and coaches just as much as they like the artists. We would all love to see a Voice artist become an A-lister but, speaking for myself, it is not the primary reason I watch the show.

I also liked the shows this week. Starting to see who can step up and who still has growth left.

My team, after I lost the sisters:

Billy 35 days (he can sing any note very well)
Riley 35 days (I love a good crooner voice)
WE 35 days (she can sing any song)
Josh H (he is a real musician, he makes me feel the music and the story)
Jason 3 days (new add, let’s see what he can do)

Of these 5, Riley is the one that can grow the most because his stage presence is so lacking. Billy or WE are serious contenders, and Josh could be my dark horse.

Billy Gilman overtook Sundance this week on iTunes. Currently he’s ranked #63 and Sundance is ranked #83. I am wondering if Gabe Broussard, Blake’s 17-year-old country kid, will do better with the voters once the live shows begin? I’m adding a country artist and an Indie artist, just don’t know which ones yet. I have at least one too many from Adam’s team at the moment.

My team:

Billy 37 days
We’ 37 days
Nolan 25 days
Josh 10 days
Brendan 3 days

(518,000 puts.)

@IronMaiden , a number of past competitors have also been songwriters, although I don’t think any of them have won. This season, Courtney Harrell is a successful songwriter, having written for Jennifer Hudson and others.

As for “karaoke,” I’m sure that lots of successful singers don’t write most of their own songs. Yes, it’s great when they do, but it’s not a necessary part of the skill set for a performer.

To add to Consolation’s song writing credits re. Courtney Harrell above:

Ariana Grande
Brandy
Chris Brown (co-writer/collaboration)
Mary J. Blige
Ne-Yo

A family friend’s son is a session musician in Nashville. A front line artist has fifty if not hundreds of songs to pick from, so getting your song chosen is no small feat in itself. Also, the artists always do covers at this stage of the competition. Some will do their own stuff during the live rounds in the coming weeks.
