Is "The Voice" Your New Vice?

Well, I used to love the Marshal Tucker Band. That’s about it for me on that list. Hate Creedence Clearwater. Not a fan of Foreigner. Haven’t heard of or don’t like many of the others.

Hey, appearance mavens–does Nicholas David have an appearance of a mall performer?

Well, Nicholas is performing tomorrow morning at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. at 11 am!

Where on the “what does it take to be a real singer” scale does a mall performer appearance come in? Above or below the appearance of a lounge or cruise ship singer? Is there an official ranking list? Is a Hobbit appearance listed?

No, I don’t think Cassadee (she has too many vowels in her name for me to ever spell it the same way twice) looks like a cruise ship performer. I think she sounds like a cruise ship/lounge performer. There’s a difference. I don’t care what they look like. I think she sounds very vanilla/bland/run of the mill/dime a dozen.

sorry cartera45, I must have misread your post #678:

Yes. And I thought Nicholas sounded amazing in that duet. I still think Cassadee will be the “surprise” winner which I know will not sit well with many of you. Blake Shelton might want to take some of the credit if she wins because I think he is wildly popular with the viewers/voters.

As the show enters the home stretch, here are some of the things I will NOT miss:

Chestina fanning herself.

CeeLo clearing his throat every time he begins to speak.

Chrisina Milian.

The sugar-coated critiques with the final 8-10.

Cassadee raising one arm each time she sings.

Nicholas’s bow.

07Dad - damn if I didn’t say that. I really meant looks as in style or how she presents, including her singing style - not physical appearance. She is a very competent singer who is usually technically correct but doesn’t offer, IMO, anything different or unique. I think she could probably get there - she’s a little edgier with her band.

cartera45–personally I was a little taken back because I thought you have a daughter who is really very into music and I could not imagine you’d want to go into looks, rather than aspects of performance. I’m glad this has been cleared up.

I just don’t happen to agree with you on her, but that is OK.

You’re right. You really can’t judge anything about how people look on a show like this because they are all styled. Edgy becomes clownish and sexy means leather.

I just want someone (or more) to give me the feeling I get from hearing *Silver Springs /I or *Southern Cross/I. If they can sing like Janis Joplin, I don’t care if they look like her or Heidi Klum, they would be “beautiful.”

The Voice is so staged and over-produced (with rare exceptions) that I tend to listen with my eyes closed. Juliet Simms came close.

Okay, ladies, who else saw Adam Levine sing during the Grammy nomination show? Forget the Voice, X Factor and American Idol … He is my XXX-Idol-Voice, and he looks great on stage to a 49-year-old lady! Go Adam.

I AGREE!, I think his fan base is VERY strong and they want one of his team’s contestants to win. They are willing to go on iTunes every week and pay $1.29/download to support Blake’s Team. If Amanda had been on Blake’s team and Cassadee on Adam’s, she would be in the final four and Cassadee would have been sent home 2 weeks ago.

I think Blake does add some boast to his contestants, but there is a lot of comment and some anger that Cassadee had huge numbers of followers on Facebook and twitter prior to being a contestant since she was the singer in Hey Monday, had releases under her prior recording contract, had one song covered on Glee, had been part of the Van’s Warped Tour and had just come off a solo tour before The Voice started airing.

The diss is that she had a built-in fan base that the others did not have and they have voted and bought on itunes to support her. Can’t say that lacks validity.

Go Nicholas! The Minnesota web and local TV coverage of Nicholas is encouraging. As is his appearance at the Mall of America today. There was a watching party at the High School he attended. I’m hoping for a grass roots movement that carries him to the final 2.

If Cassadee wins it will really invalidate The Voice for me. I know that of course things are staged and producers affect things, and so on, but in the first two seasons people who really were outstanding vocalists generally advanced. If it turns into nothing but a voting contest dominated by factors OTHER than singing–the kind of BS that keeps a Bristol Palin on DWTS week after week, for example–then I will have much less interest in watching it past the blind auditions, which are fun.

PS 07DAD, I am awed by your research! :D

That does sound like Cassadee has a built in advantage.

I am hoping it is Terry and Nicholas in the final two.

And Snowflake, I did not see Adam on the Grammy show but do agree with you about him (and I am OLDER than 49!).

On board for next Monday’s show----all 4 contestants go “home” to perform with a Voice film crew in tow. Nicholas to Minn and the Mall of America. Trevin to Georgia at his middle school in Lithonia (outside Atlanta). Terry to NOLA and the Hard Rock Cafe and the Crown Anchor & Pub. Cassadee to West Palm Beach (the mayor gave her the keys to the city).

With the voting by the public, I really don’t see it as capable of not being a popularity contest. But I did look to see if anyone had an unfair advantage. I decided that Trevin is at a disadvantage because he lacks mainstream music business experience. Everyone other than Trevin has pre-Voice followers/fans.

Terry had a band in UK. He has resided in the US since 2003. He has had a recording contract with A&M (the band was signed by Ron Fair) and then moved to Geffen when Ron Fair moved over. Two albums released on Geffen (2006 and 2008). Then he was signed by Fontana and released an album in March 2011 and performed at SXSW the next month. He and his family first lived in LA and moved several years ago to New Orleans.

One of my prior posts discusses Cassadee’s contracts and music business experience. When Terry was asked about Cassadee’s success with the Voice voters, he said he had no problem since she had traveled the same rough road with disappointing recording contracts, constant touring etc.

You will just have to read this piece on Nicholas and then listen to him and his “the Feelin’ Band” to see that he has been in the game for real prior to the Voice.

Trevin is “the mystery man.” I will say that the two home country websites I found urge everyone living in Guyana to vote for him. He was not born there, but his parents were. Since the teacher “diss” occurred in middle school, I guess it happened in Georgia not NY or Guyana.

There is an interesting web article on the back stage process of the Voice. Because of HD, all contestants (at least after the blind auditions) have their hair styled and wear full face and all exposed skin make-up. The clothing is selected by wardrobe and the budget goes up as the rounds progress.

From a marketing standpoint, Cassadee has the advantage. The past two winners haven’t stood out compared to say Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, past American Idol winners. Because of this, the show is looking for someone who can do the same.

Terry and Nicholas appeal more because they sound like performers and bands from the past. They’d have marketing appeal limited mainly to older generations.

Trevin is inexperienced and still developing. It would be hard to place him in any niche at this time. Give him a few years and he could develop mass appeal.

Cassadee can be marketed as another Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne or Christina. Her appeal would range from young teens to adults. Blake had her singing country songs, so she’ll have appeal with country fans. Marketing is probably drooling because she has the potential for a quick rise, even though it might last only a few years. Also, if Cassadee make it to the finals, she has a good chance of winning, since she has the most songs to top the itunes charts, giving her a lead in the vote count.

Adam has been my imaginary boyfriend since Maroon 5’s “Songs about Jane” album. Back off ladies–I saw him first!

For your viewing pleasure (NSFW):

Add this to the job description of a “hand model.”

Whoa, MommaJ!

Quick, somebody hand me Chestina’s fan!
